Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

I couldn't be happier with the work that Tile & Art did for me. Not only did I get quality work at a competitive price but the attention to detail was top notch! And Klement was very careful and respectful while working in our home. The best compliment I can give is that Tile & Art will be the only call I make if I ever need tile installed again.

We hired Rueben to complete a backsplash in our kitchen as well as fix tile on our shower floor that another contractor did incorrectly. He was fast, communicated well, and his prices were extremely reasonable. We will absolutely hire him again!

Folks, I hardly write any reviews as I am an extremely busy person, but I honestly felt obligated to do it in this instance. Wade Johnson did floor, bathroom, and brick Wall work at my residence that involved large 8"x48" Walker Zanger and 24"x36" Porcelanosa tiles that only an expert could install. I'm an extremely picky engineer myself, and look for perfection ! Without any hesitation, I can tell you to stop looking and hire Wade if you can get him. His knowledge, expertise, punctuality and professionalism is unsurpassed. He went out of his way and purchased a very expensive leveling tool set to ensure that the large tiles where aligned without any lipping (I honestly don't think he made any profit on the job after I priced this new tech tool set). He Red Guarded my bathroom walls before installing the tiles to ensure that my shower/steam bath is 100% waterproof. He was annoyingly on time everyday and did work above and beyond what he had to do. He does not just supervise, he is on the ground on his knees doing the work himself. The guy is an honest man, a craftsman, and that is a rarity these days. His prices are very reasonable too. I settled on Wade after interviewing 7 tile setters, I told you I'm picky. So ! there you have it, the research is done for you, hopefully he can fit you in his schedule.

He did a really great job. My husband and I work all week, and he was really great about doing the tile on Fridays over a couple weeks. He understood that it can be hard to get away from a 9-5 job. And he was really great at explaining our options and be honest and involved with us in the process, which I appreciated a lot.

Raul and his partner did an outstanding job of cleaning my tile floors and restoring the grout to new. Raul came to my home to inspect the floors and explain the cleaning process. His estimate was extremely fair. He showed up on time, brought all of his own equipment and cleaning supplies, and finished on time. He couldn't have been more friendly or professional. I highly recommend him.

Ruben was very professional, punctual, thorough and accommodating. It was clear that he had a lot of experience during his inspection of the job details and based on the questions he asked. This was a small job that might not have been worth someone else’s time but he showed up and did an excellent job and for a reasonable fee. I will definitely hire him again for larger jobs in the future and highly recommend him to anyone who needs excellent work quality and tile installation!

Ricardo is my tile savior! I had a very bad experience with a general contractor regarding 2.5 bath renovation. Her guys were not thorough or caring and even ripped off a giant section of waterproofing paper in my guest bathroom shower. Anyway, luckily I found Ricardo on here. He has been taking great care that everything is correctly waterproofed. He is communicative and punctual. If I don’t like something we talk about it and he always makes sure I know what’s going on. He’s still working on my master bathroom but I thought I’d post a few pictures of the finished guest bath! Highly recommend:)
