Chef Pete was awesome. He was able to work with our late arrival and had the best meal prepared for our arrival. Every menu item was delicious and I gave very little direction. Simply told him the dietary restrictions and he exceeded all expectations. I didn't eat the dessert so I can't leave a review for that but the appetisers and dinner were amazing. He had the best personality to accompany the great meal. I would hire him again for sure. I searched around and Chef Pete was the best value by far without compromising quality.

Sat was incredible! He cooked an amazing 3 course meal for 8 assorted finicky, typical, crazy Bay Area dietary restricted people (gluten-free, lactose intolerant, vegetarian, etc.) and made us all happy!! I got stuck at work so I left a key under my mat for St to get in and start cooking. When I got home, my house smelled amazing! Sat found everything, was already cooking away and comfortable. He is not only a great chef, but a really warm and down to earth person. You can tell he loves what he does and it shows in his food. Aside from the fantastic herbed zucchini goat cheese appetizer that was scarfed down by everyoe rather quickly, we had the best kabocha squash soup I have ever had and grilled sea bass on a quinoa pilaf that was to die for. (My mouth is watering as I write this!) I had told Sat that I was going to do my own hors d'oeuvres and had bought some cheese and fruit spreads, baguette, grapes, etc. Sat offered to help me plate and arrange them and I wish I could channel him every time I entertain. My platters were gorgeous. I would (and will) hire Sat back in a heartbeat. I'm planning already......

A Plus catering provided a competent team of two servers for our event. They arrived on time, professionally dressed and ready to help. They helped with plating and passing our appetizers and dessert, gathering used plates and glasses, and rinsing and stacking our rental items. Overall they did a solid job.

Debbie was professional from the start. It was inevitable that she takes pride in her food making sure that whatever she serves not only looks great, but tastes great. She was willing to prepare an appetizer that she's never made before and it turned out perfect. I received many compliments from my guests on the party table and some are interested in hiring Made With Love for their parties. Thank you Debbie for doing such a wonderful job! The name of your business suits your service.

I had a great experience with hiring Kitchenina as our caterers for an event with 40 people. The communication was always prompt, polite and friendly. They did a great job on the day of the event to ensure that the food was delivered on time (despite the traffic/weather conditions) and made my job as the event organizer much easier. I would definitely work with Kitchenina again in the future, and regret that I did not take photos of the food! (Thanks for the brownies as well!)

As a event coordinator I have worked with Steve and the folks at DNL Catering on many special occasions. We have worked together on wedding and baby showers, brunches, wedding receptions, work Christmas parties and anniversary parties. They always provide a menu to your request and the playing of the food is always on beautiful plates and dishes, not aluminum trays. There are always compliments on the foods from the guests. We are always a happy with the selections. Their website makes it easy to browse their menu and I always receive a reply promptly when I submit an event request online. DNL Catering is on my preferred vendor list when I meet with future clients. I have used them in my own home numerous times. They are my 'go to' caterers for any event.

Richmond Main Street was one of the first catering jobs that Quiche and Carry ever did. Deborah was great. She was very attentive to us as customers and wanted to make sure that she got it right. The quiches were delicious. She is very creative and knows how to mix flavors. I had never tried a dessert quiche before and was a bit skeptical but it was fantastic. I would highly recommend her. Although it was her first job she was great. We have used her since that first time and will continue to use her. Yum!

Alisa made everything I asked her to make and presented it beautifullly. She catered a High School graduation all night party held at the High School. She cooked the hot food for our diner on the premises. She had the appetizer platters premade and ready to go. She came early which I appreciated, and the food was made and served on time. I asked her to leave the leftovers for the kids and adult volunteers to graze on as the night went on and she did. We met at the school weeks before the event to coordinate where the cooking would be done. Also how and where things would be served. The quality of her work exceeded my expectations. I was personally nervous and wanted the diner I had set up for the kids to be perfect. Alisa helped make that happen. I would highly recommend Alisa as she was very detail oriented and did a magnificant job!

The vegetarian meal that Grace catered for us at my home for my 70th birthday was superb. Fantastic artichoke appetizer, main course of 3 items that blended in flavors beautifully, and tiramisu that she made for dessert. She worked quietly, served, and then cleaned up. Very high recommendation!

Lucas was the consummate professional all around. I truly enjoyed working with him - especially on such short notice. He was quick to respond in the planning stages. As for the meal, our group loved it. He cooked a spectacular prime rib roast with roasted vegetable. The homemade pasta with the saffron sauce was delicious. The amuse bouche and dessert were wonderful complements to the main courses. His server, Angel, was great, as well. I would highly recommend Lucas to anyone. Thanks for making our evening spectacular.

I went on a girls' trip to Napa Valley. I wanted to hire Chef Cheri for our first night dinner so we could relax. She told me upfront she would be out of town but she would be happy to assist us. She informed me that she had a vast network. Over the next 2 weeks she connected me with a chef and a photographer. She followed up and was very timely. We were so pleased when we arrived at the home and she had 3 bottles of wine waiting on us. She also had baked us custom red velvet cupcakes with elephant decorations (DST)...they were amazing. The chefs she connected us with were on time. In fact, they beat us to the home. They were so professional and made a delicious dinner for us and provided table service. The photographer she connected us with was punctual and took the most fabulous photos. He was very easy to work with. So I would call Chef Cheri anytime I needed any service in the Bay area. She is top notch and provides world class service. I felt like her family by the time we finished.

What an incredible pop-up and delicious food! Dennis was awesome in working with our organization for our holiday party. He was very responsive and helped us organize platters for ~80 people. His food was demolished by our team well before the night ended. Highly recommend!

I wanted my own birthday to be one I could enjoy, I love cooking and I am always the one hosting and doing it myself! I decided for the first time to hire someone so I could have the night to enjoy. This is where Zack came in. I canteven begin to describe how great he was! He took over everything and made the night perfect! He worked with me on the menu and made everything seem possible, his menu he sent me looked amazing and creative. He arrived on time and immediately started preparing. The food was beyond my expectations, three entrees, which included a steak dish with delicious sauces, a Moroccan chicken stew and a shrimp dish with kale and corn, four side dishes, all unique and so perfectly complimentary to the entrees! My guests were so pleased. It really made my birthday! Thank you so much! Can't wait to have you back!

We had a fantastic experience hiring John, and I would unreservedly recommend him. I was hosting an 8-person dinner party with a group of international friends at a rental property in Sonoma in mid November. He was very responsive to my fairly vague request on Thumbtack, instantly proposing a delicious-sounding 4 course meal with appetizers that took account of my preference for mostly vegan dishes. He was flexible and easy to work with at a very reasonable price point. He arrived on time with his wife to help, and they cooked, served and cleaned very professionally with a great friendly attitude. I would certainly hire him again.

Chef Eileen was the greatest! This was a first time experience for us, hiring a personal chef for a small group of 8. It was a bachelorette party and the best touch to start an otherwise amazing weekend. Chef Eileen was professional, extremely sweet and most of all our 4 course dinner was delicious! The entire group was happy!! We will certainly do business again in the future and I believe she even gained new clients from our experience. Thank you Chef Eileen!!! All the best, Jenett

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
