Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Hector was the first roofer to come bid a re-roof for an 88 year old flat roof house I own . I talked to 3 others who couldn't match his price and didn't seem too interested in trying this house. No Limit Roofing came thru and saved me from having to deal once more with a really bad roof leak. They got to the job 5 days earlier than Hector had originally scheduled and worked every day till it was finished .There was unanticipated wood damage and multiple layers of hot tar roofing I didn't know about. No Limit took care of these things at a very fair price. I give them an A+ and plan to use them again.

When selling our house, our home inspector called out some roof tiles that were broken and missing bird blocks. Matt was able to come out to inspect our roof and provide us a reasonable price for the repairs. Once the materials were in, Matt was able to get out and complete the work in a timely manner. We will reach out to Matt for any future roof repairs.

George and his crew did a great job. Showed up when they said they would and had it done on time. I had a fair amount of roof deck damage and they did a nice job repairing that as well for a reasonable fee. Would definitely recommend them to anyone I know.

Met with Steve Box this morning and his crew and they shortly began to do my roof repairs. They were finished within 4 hours and then showed me their work. Besides fixing the main leak they also identified other possible leaks and repaired them. The true test comes after the next rain to verify that it's no longer leaking. But if it is then Steve will stand by his work for two years. At this point I'm pretty pleased as the work they did came at what seemed like a fair price.

When I met Hector at our first interview, I was impressed with his professionalism and sincerity. He answered my questions directly and honestly. Unlike other bids before him, I felt he wasn't trying to sell me anything more than I needed or pressuring me in any way. During the roofing he addressed all my concerns and accommodated any minor changes to my complete satisfaction. He arrived on time as promised every day and finished in a timely fashion. I felt his bid was fair and he completed everything as promised. I would strongly recommend his services to anyone.

We had a leak in the master bedroom and needed it patched before the last storms. I was impressed with how quickly Phil responded and was able to help us out with our roof. He patched the leak and assessed how many broken tiles needed replacement. Unfortunately the patch wasn't in the right area and the leak grew worse with the rain. I've been trying to contact Phil for the past two weeks to schedule the tile replacement and also to have him come out and look at the leak. After a number of phone calls, voicemails and texts I finally was able to reach him through a Thumbtack message. He called immediately and said he would touch base with me later that evening to schedule and appointment. It's been two days and still haven't heard from him.
