Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

STAY AWAY FROM NUTECH ROOFING & CONSTRUCTION. This is the company your dad warned you about. I had thought that I did a good job researching Roofing companies for the purpose of tending to a small "area of concern" on my roof. While my roof was not brand new, I never had ANY issues with leaks or anything else... until I hired NuTech Roofing & Construction. The salesman was clean and professional, and their price was extremely fair, but we all know that you get what you pay for.... Now, I have leaks appearing where NuTech worked, and ONLY where they worked. NuTech's work was sub par, (inspected by several other companies who pointed out the crappy workmanship). NuTech would not stand by their warrantee, even after several attempts to explain that my roof did not leak prior to their service. NuTech offered to patch additional areas for additional costs (rip me off more), and even suggested that their company would put on a new roof for me, (that would have been an ongoing nightmare). The leaking is so bad, that I was forced to prematurely install a new roof. $$$$$$$

Great guy! Quoted at a very reasonable price. Was out at the house the next day to do the repair. Will definitely be a returning customer for my roofing needs.

Brian was great with explaining everything we needed done. Kenny and his crew worked three days in a row with hardly any breaks. Cleaned constantly throughout the day and before they went home double check all around the house and drive way for nails. Roof looks wonder. Deanne in the office is lovely. Thank you all. We highly recommend Castle Roofing.

Tim and crew did a leak repair and roof maintenance job on my roof. Although too early to assess the quality, the promptness, attention to details and work ethics were evident. The work comes with a two year warranty and I have no doubt they will honor it. The office manager, Ariel was polite, responsive and courteous during the quote/scheduling/payment process. I will surely call on Blake Co in the future and recommend them to family and friends

I just got a new roof on my small cottage in Clearwater. I was replacing an old roof that needed a fair amount of repair. Beams did a great job. Gary is a true pro who knows his stuff. He is responsive, courteous and very knowledgeable. He did what he said he was going to do- on time and of great quality. You’ll always get a return call promptly. I would use Beams and Gary again without hesitation. It was a pleasure dealing with them.

Hello. I contacted company for general information if I were to purchase a home and need a new roof. Unfortunately, this company needs to be "on-site". For me, this did not help me. I really don't know what a new roof costs. So thankfully another company tried to give a general idea. I realize one has to be on site. Now a days people work from computers and are able to pull things from satellite and such. If home works out I will have to see if rates are competitive.

Rainy season is very busy for any roofer as everyone finds out they have a leak during this time. I contacted Kavin based on his good reviews. We are going on our third try of fixing an issue but so-far Kavin has made the time to come out and try again. He has many years of experience in roofing and educated me on some things that I never knew could be possible issues. I'm looking towards beating this roof issue so I can move onto other projects around the house.

We couldn’t be happier to have connected with Kavin. He was very knowledgeable about our roofing issue and gave us options. He was able to do the work same day and at a fair price. We will definitely be reaching out to Kavin for future work. Highly recommend.
