I was tasked with planning my best friend's bachelorette weekend in Ft. Lauderdale. This meant I had to account for the dietary restrictions of 18 girls: from 2 people with Celiac disease to fish allergies to vegetarians, it was Chef Jeff to the rescue. Chef Jeff prepared a taco bar for us night 1, brought us delicious salads with a broad array of yummy sandwiches day 2 and came over day 3 to prepare omelettes for a made to order style breakfast. Everything was amazing and Chef Jeff was a pro. He consulted with me constantly to ask informed questions about our Celiac girls and thought of innovative solutions to give them something delicious: like the cauliflower tortillas he made night 1. The girls raved about the food and Chef Jeff all weekend. Not only that, Chef Jeff was fun, professional and amazing to work with. He was super flexible and willing to work with me as I had to stick to a budget. Thanks so much Chef Jeff, you made our weekend unforgettable!!!

The owner was incredibly easy to coordinate with. We had planned our family meal well in advance. It was on time, easy to serve, easy to clean up(the employee who handled the delivery was organized and super nice.) They even sent flowers! The Thanksgiving turkey was moist and flavorable as were all of the sides and desserts. We have tried everything in the past on Thanksgiving and this was hands down the closest experience to homemade without being in the kitchen all day, that we have ever had! Was awesome! At the last minute, they were also nice enough to help me feed an office staff that ended up having to work. Amazing customer service and our employees loved it. The chef even delivered himself and my manager informed me that he was amazing too! My family and employees are already planning an event to try his ribs, that we heard are very tasty. Lots of Thanks to The Catering Group

Chef Tim was fantastic. His preparation and presentation was fabulous. He was outgoing and very attentive and no detail was overlooked. His staff and himself did a fabulous job, I had nothing to clean at the end of the night and nothing to worry about during the night. Chef thinks of everything. All of his appetizers were delicious and am still being complimented on the food. His beef skewers are highly recommended. My only negative was a few of the dinner selections I made were slightly bland. I will definitely use him again and recommend him and all 35 of my guests said how terrific the evening was because of Chef and his staff.

As a destination bride, I was not in the city to prepare the wedding and all the details I wanted for my party. I and Chef Laura discussed the details by phone and emails. I could not possibly be more satisfied with her service, professionalism, and attention to details. Without mentioning the food!! Everything was perfect, from the food presentation to its flavor! Perfect and delicious! By hiring Chef Laura, I was able to enjoy the party without worrying about anything else. Comments from my guests: Best wedding ever!

We posted a request for the first time on Thumbtack and received great responses for our last minute dinner party. After reviewing Cindy's response then her website we immediately knew she was the one. We had to select someone we could trust to shop, go to our house before we arrived and have a dinner waiting for us. Her and an assistant went way beyond our expectations. The house smelled amazing upon our arrival. The table was set, appetizers were waiting and the dinner/wine paring and dessert were amazing. We had a wonderful evening and loved spending time with Cindy. She is funny, entertaining and one of the greatest chefs I have ever met. We loved her stories from Corporate America to a Chef and cookbook Author. We hope to see you on the Foodnetwork! As I told her along with our celebrity friends she would be a big hit! Thanks again! Ron

Maoz cooked a complete buffet-style dinner for ten, including desserts that included two cakes with the names of two people having birthdays written in frosting. The food was excellent! Maoz showed-up on-time and did all he promised! He helped with all aspects of the event, including dishwasher loading and most of the kitchen cleaning. His lamb chops were breaded and enjoyed by all, as was his airline chicken. His asparagus was also perfect. Easy communication, fair price. no fuss, no muss! Thanks Maoz!

Kerry is an amazing pastry chef and beautiful person on the inside and out! I sent her the party invite and asked if she can match the design on the cake, add watercolor effect and nautical elements for my sister's baby shower. She matched the cake design perfectly and added her personal touch as well. It was tastefully done and came out elegant and way beyond my expectations! The cake was not only beautiful but also so tasty! Everyone were impressed and now two weeks later we still talk about it. Kerry was also professional and punctual. She kept communicating on the progress, asking questions, keeping me informed and delivered on time. Perfection!

Excellent service and food. We were very pleased and our guests were pleased. Nobody's perfect but they were close to perfect. The price was extremely reasonable. Chef Mer volunteered to come by our house in the days before our wedding to pick up supplies (cups, plates, etc) that we would have otherwise had to bring ourselves - and he did it at no additional cost to us. He also volunteered to go to Restaurant Depo to pick up champagne flutes for us because we couldn't find them on our own. Again, he did this at no cost to us. He cut our cake and served our champagne. He's just a nice guy. You will not be disappointed. Thank you, Chef! :)

Chef Keicha was amazing. She is personable and kind and her food is out of this world. She partnered with us on menus for three dinners. Our 9 year old son is gluten free and she made him a delicious key lime pie that he is still talking about. My 7 year old daughter ate three helpings of cilantro/almond pesto! The whole family was delighted and we all enjoyed her company. It was a fantastic experience and we look forward to using her services again.

Chef Carla has personally catered parties for me. She is articulate, innovative and thorough. I have also attended friends events where Chef has catered and, Naturally, experienced the same results. She is priced fairly, extremely dependable and always produces memorable fare. I will ALWAYS call upon her for my future catering needs. Furthermore, I would never hesitate to refer her services to others. Carla is much more than a Chef......she pulls it all together and delivers a successful experience.

Chef Jess is very easy to work with. She add lots of helpful hints depending on your skill level. I was amazed how simple it can be to make sauces and dressings from scratch rather than buying them in a jar at the store.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
