Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why is my air conditioner leaking water?

An air conditioner leaking inside the house is a common problem. It could indicate that the air filter is dirty. Or, one of the following may be the culprit:

  • Clogged condensate drain line
  • Leaky, damaged, cracked or rusted drain pan
  • Dirty or broken coils
  • Frozen evaporator coils
  • Broken condensate pump
  • Not enough refrigerant
  • Disconnected drain line

If your AC is leaking, contact a repair service to find out what the problem is — and how much it will cost to fix it.

Is it worth it to install central air?

Depending on where you live, it might be worth it to install central air. Central air makes your house comfortable on hot summer days. And although it’s hard to predict if adding central air will increase your home’s value, prospective homebuyers will certainly notice if it’s missing.

Another advantage of central air is that it can help dehumidify your home. Not only will it make your home more comfortable and enjoyable, but it can also  help prevent mold from growing or spreading.

Contact the best HVAC contractors near you to learn more about the central air installation process and to start receiving free estimates.

Can I install central air myself?

While you may be able to do some preparation work for central air installation, you should hire a licensed contractor to complete the project and handle the air conditioning refrigerants.

Also, unless you have the proper credentials, you risk making common mistakes when installing central air. This may include installing the wrong-size furnace, improperly installing ductwork and exhaust systems, and incorrectly managing drainage.

To ensure your central air is installed correctly, contact the best HVAC pros near you and start getting free estimates today.

Does central air add value to a home?

A central air unit or HVAC system may add value to your home. Or, if you’re in the process of selling your home, it may help you close a sale.

The Remodeling Impact report found that 20% of realtors have suggested that home sellers replace their HVAC before attempting to sell their homes, and 7% said this project did help close a sale.

Talk with an expert to figure out if adding an HVAC system is a good idea for your home. And contact the best HVAC pros near you to get free estimates so you’ll know how much this project will cost you.

Does an HVAC technician need to enter my home?

Because most HVAC systems are located in the home, it’s likely that an HVAC technician would need to enter yours when working on the projects. However, there might be exceptions. Some HVAC systems are located in garages or in areas of the house that are sectioned off. During the consultation, ask your technician if they'll need to enter your home.

When you contact local technicians, ask if they’ll perform a video call in place of a traditional consultation. Be sure to send all materials like photos and documents digitally, and comply with all relevant guidelines.

Do HVAC technicians offer remote or virtual services?

Because HVAC technicians need to be physically present to do their work, they have not conventionally offered remote or virtual services. However, with the importance of social distancing due to COVID-19, the need for remote capabilities is greater than ever. If you come across a profile that states the HVAC technician or AC professional is offering remote services, message the pro to find out what those services include.

Consult with your technician to see if the technician will be able to perform a video call consultation. You can find local technicians near you by searching online.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a HVAC technician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a safe consultation or appointment with an HVAC technician during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by comparing technicians in your area in an online search. Message or call technicians to ask whether they can perform a consultation over the phone or even over a video call. This way, they can assess the problem without increasing the risk of virus transmission by visiting your house.

If it turns out the service is essential, you’ll need to follow CDC guidelines as well as local government guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety.

Can I use digital payments to pay for central air conditioning services?

The use of digital payment platforms -- like Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle, Venmo and Square Cash -- is common among air conditioning technicians. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is improving the adoption of these platforms as a means of helping social distancing.

As you compare local air conditioning technicians online, contact them to see if they’ll accept digital payments. Also, discuss strategies for completing the job while complying with safety guidelines for reducing the risk of exposure.

How can I find out if an HVAC technician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Currently, governments on both the federal and local levels are updating guidelines on what qualifies as an essential service. To see whether an HVAC technician is considered an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic, check your city or state’s government website.

For federal guidelines, check CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which identifies 16 critical infrastructure sectors during the crisis. But note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an HVAC technician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a technician for an HVAC repair or installation project, practice current social distancing guidelines. This may require remaining outside while the technician works or ensuring the technician can work in a sectioned-off area or outbuilding.

Comply with social distancing guidelines while the technician is performing work. Do not make physical contact with technicians, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, sanitize all involved spaces and surface and pay using a digital platform instead of cash or a check.

Mr. Benford was amazing. Arrived ahead of schedule, quickly assessed and fixed the issue with our air conditioner. We definitely intend to use him in the future if any problems arise as well as ask him to inspect the HVAC when we decide to buy a new home.

Ben was so great to work with. He was honest, fast, professional, knowledgeable, and I couldn't imagine finding a better value. Ben showed up on time or early and communicated with us well throughout the entire process. He is without a doubt our HVAC guy for as long as he's in business.

T&J Air Conditioning provided superb service. I’m so pleased with their work. They’re my 3rd HVAC contractors that I’ve hired since I moved into my house and they’ll be my last. I intend to hire them for all future air conditioner issues. Recommend 100%.

Was able to quickly diagnose the issue with one of my HVAC units and had us up and cooling in minutes. He also provided clear details and advice on how to keep them running efficiently. The next day, the other unit went out and he made an unscheduled trip to resolve the issue at no charge. Definitely 5-star customer service and quality.

I couldn’t give 5 stars due to how late they were, and I could have excused it if the communication was better. They missed their two hour window, they didn’t contact me until a half hour after the window, and then communication was sporadic until they finally showed up 2.5 hours late. However, they were super apologetic and did a super quick and effective repair on an HVAC system in a tight crawlspace, so I will most likely give them another chance.

I contacted Matt when my older A/C unit was giving trouble and needed to be replaced. I requested quote from a few companies and he quoted an excellent price for a Rheem system and was willing to install it in a few days. His crew arrived yesterday and changed the system. Very communicative and professional in the dealings with Matt & his crew. I have no doubt that Matt and his team are going to be a top HVAC pro in the Atlanta area. I will be calling them if I need help in the future.

I had a heating problem with our HVAC short cycling. We had 1 inspection and he told us we needed a new furnace for $3k! I had to get a second opinion before buying a whole new furnace. In comes CAL and he's looking and taking things apart, cleaning some sensors, then bam he tells its the upper limit sensor. Goes gets it, replaces it, and sends me an invoice for less than 1/10th of the cost of the first guy. I couldn't pay him fast enough, I was jumping around so much. I wouldn't trust anyone but CAL regarding heating and air!

In addition to Clarence's professional approach and candor, his no-nonsense recommendations makes all the difference. When he gave me the quote, which included material and labor, and then asked when do I want the installation to be done, I immediately responded, "Like yesterday." He and his crew turned up the next day (Saturday) and completed the work after delivering the materials on Friday...I am completely awed by such response and efficacy from a small business. If you're looking for a good HVAC installer and troubleshooter, please give Clarence from CAL property Care the opportunity to provide your needs. I guarantee you'll seldom find such honesty and professionalism. Great price, Great Attitude, Excellent service.

Very informative Technician but as soon as I hired him, he told me that he would arrive within 20 minutes after picking up his van. This is after I told the other HVAC technician who was running late and juggling other jobs that I no longer needed him. He let me know from the start that this was his recreational time and that he had no plans on working today but will gladly take the job. he proceeded to give me very valuable advice on how my unit should be repaired and what I needed to look out for. I quickly noticed that he was breathing heavy on the phone which concerned me. The previous technician was scheduled to arrive at 6 pm today 07/13/2017 so when he didn't arrive promptly but instead called at 5:59 pm, he called me to tell me he would arrive in 15 minutes, I told him that I no longer needed him and I decided to hire Cal. To confirm the time and location and followed up with a call to inform him of what door to knock on. He proceeded to interview me; who;s the home owner, will I be at the house and other interrogating questions. When I asked for a set time of arrival he said he would give me a time once he picked up his vehicle which was unacceptable. I ended up telling Cal I no longer needed him. Unfortunately the work ethics of professionals in this county and zip code isn't great and advise anyone to pay close attention to what people are saying on the phone and not just their reviews. While Cal may be great at what he does he lacks organization and or management skills for his profession which is fairly common in many fields. The less educated or refined a consumer is the more tolerant or passive they be in recognizing or dealing with a servicemans unprofessionalism. Now after telling him that I no longer needed he sends me a message asking me if I still needed him and informing me that he is available tomorrow between 9 am and 10 am. I've attached a photo to this review. I have since found someone and a gentleman that I've been working with on and off for 2 years who does excellent work at a great price.
