Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Travis has been great to work with. Quality of work out, great to team/coordinate with, really great at adjusting workouts without loss in effectiveness when it came to pain points/past injuries I was having. I have worked with multiple personal trainers over the years and Travis is the best I have worked with.

I started working out with Shane about three months ago, shortly after I moved to Portland. I came to Portland knowing that I wanted to get in shape and he has definitely helped me with that. I got a personal trainer to help me build muscle and I also wanted to put on some weight. I train with Shane twice a week and definitely see a big difference from where I was when I started and where I am now. I am so much stronger than I was and have a lot more endurance than I did when I started. I don't walk as well as others and he has really helped with basic things such as my balance, posture, and flexibility. The workouts are tailored to how I am feeling that day. He challenges me to push myself harder than I think I can, but he is normally right. I am generally surprised with how strong I have gotten because I am still skinny but have muscles now. Shane's personality really works for the type of personal trainer that I was looking for as well. I came into this thinking that all personal trainers were like wannabe drill sergeants but Shane is really personable. He still gets down to business and corrects me if I am doing something the wrong way, but even if the workout is really tough that day, I still walk away from it feeling really good. I feel like doing personal training was a great decision and feel lucky that this has worked out so well. I am going to be putting in a third day on my own during the week but definitely want to continue doing this as long as possible because it has been one of the best things that I have ever done for myself.

I haven’t work with Taylor long, but she has so much energy and positivity! She so easy to talk to, and makes me sweat my butt off in a work out! I know good things are going to come from this! I was so nervous about getting my first personal trainer, but I made the right choice picking Taylor!

Lisa set me up with a phenomenal personal trainer, Lauren. Lauren started out by gaining a thorough understanding of my background and my goals, and then has designed workouts that will help me reach my goals. I look forward to our sessions and leave feeling stronger, more energized, and, taller! My whole day is better after getting started with Lauren.

Kristin is awesome! Though ultimately I decided to go with a gym membership to kick off my new fitness journey and will re-visit personal training at a later time, she went above and beyond to make sure I had resources to help me on my journey and really appreciated her genuine willingness to help me. Not only is she kind, but you can tell that she does have your best interest of your health in mind and I truly hope I will have the opportunity to train with her in the future when I'm ready. Highly recommended!

Training with Therd is not an option--it's a must. His methods may be familiar, but their execution to support your individual goals are unique and inspiring. His wholistic approach helps clients of all ages, stages, and intents to aspire not to achieve greatness as defined by the world at large, but as defined by clients' own ideas of "personal perfection." With Therd as a trainer, a mentor, and leader for those desiring a healthier, balanced lifestyle, clients quickly realize that their greatest goals can and will be realized, not through endless of hours of blood, sweat, and tears, but by tapping into "the strength within" and becoming their own beacon toward a better life.

I cannot say enough good things about Brett. He is an amazing trainer! He teaches by demonstrating first and explains concepts clearly. He is very positive and encouraging, but will not coddle you. (which I prefer and appreciate) I feel like he listened to my personal fitness goals, and has a plan in place to get me there while holding me accountable.

I have been working with Mel twice a week for seven months. She is knowledgeable, confident, and in-tuned with my needs. First I would like to say I was diagnosed with primary progressive ms two years ago at the age of 62. I have always been active with biking, hiking, running and playing golf but my symptoms left me with limited abilities. I decided to find a personal trainer to see if I could improve my quality of life. Since working with Mel seven months ago and she has found my strength. My endurance is much better, my balance even impressed my neurologist. I am back to bike riding. If you are looking for a dedicated personal trainer, check out Mel. Her goals is to help her clients in having a better quality of life. She has definitely improved mine. She is my life time commitment. Thank you are my hero

Jason Trammell is a very good personal trainer. I am 59 years old and have Spastic/Dystonic Cerebral Palsy. When I went on Thumbtack to find a trainer (I did say I had Cerebral Palsy), Jason was the only one to reply. Most personal trainers would not know how to work with me, but Jason stepped up to the challenge. I have been work with Jason for over 6 months. Once I talked with him about how my disability affected my muscle movements and balance, he figured out the best way in which to work with me. That said, He doesn’t treat me with “kid gloves”, instead he pushes me to my limit and sometimes beyond. When I feel like can’t do something, he gets me to try and usually he is right. This technique helps by reducing my limits and building my strength. I do need to say that I always feel safe that I will not fall or get hurt, because Jason is always close by to make sure that doesn’t happen! Most people hire trainers for weight loss. I was 10 pounds underweight. Jason made up a food schedule for me and is constantly bugging me about eating more, now I’m only 5 pounds underweight. Strength training is so very important for people, especially woman, over 45 whether or not you have a disability. Working out with Jason will keep me from needing to use a wheelchair or scooter for many years to come, as well as keep me independent in my own home and doing all the regular things everyone else can do. Finally, Jason’s prices are very reasonable. if you look up the cost of joining a gym and having a personal trainer 3-times a week, you will probably be paying twice as much! Plus he comes to your home so you don’t have to go out in the cold and rain in the winter. Anne-Marie Hughey 913-745-6540 (Voice)

I was nervous about going to a personal trainer, because I am definitely not the athletic type. Scott put me immediately at ease. It helps that he's older like me and understands the needs of my body. I love the variety of exercises that we do and the care he puts into finding movements that work my body without hurting my joints. I've been going for a month and I already feel stronger and more capable.

I have been training with Turk for about three months now and have had great results after trying to no avail on my own. I am sitting here typing in jeans I had not been able to pull on for a year. I never hired a personal trainer before, so this has been a new experience for me. I was a little nervous about going to a muscle gym, but I saw on the reviews that Turk works with plenty of women (I am mid-40's) so I took a chance. I could not be happier and feel like I really lucked out. Turk is very responsive and listens to what it is that you want to accomplish. He created a very doable plan for me which included explaining how to eat appropriately. I always thought that fruit and lettuce would be how to lose weight and I could not have been more wrong. I have been eating plenty of food while losing weight and fat and building lean muscle. The few times I have texted Turk with the various temptations out in the world, he has responded almost immediately with support and encouragement. If you are planning to work with a personal trainer and are serious about putting in the effort, I would give Turk 6 out of 5 stars...go for it. He is the real deal. You will not be disappointed.

My husband and I found Travis on Thumbtack about 3mths ago. We both work out with him twice a week. I have had several personal trainers over the years and find Travis to be the most knowledgeable. I like to ask a lot of " why" questions about the exercises we are doing and he always has a very informative answer. I have learned a lot about fitness since I started training with him. He also pays attention to form, is very conscious of our position and always makes sure we perform each exercise correctly. My husband has back problems and Travis is able to help him with his back issue by offering him exercises he can do to help him strengthen and stretch his back. My husband has found this very helpful. Overall , we have had a very positive experience working with Travis and I would highly recommend him as a trainer.

Travis is a great trainer to work with. He asks a lot of questions and is genuinely interested in your specific goals, with a really healthy focus on nutrition and full-body health, including guidelines for when to eat, how much sleep to aim for, workouts outside of a gym (when traveling), and more. Travis is easy-going and attentive — I can't say how many times I pinged him with a question via email or text to which I usually got a fairly prompt answer, a huge help for someone who's struggling to learn the ropes of a healthier diet and fitness. Compared to other trainers I've worked with in the past, this was a huge thumbs up. In the end I was unable to stick with it for personal reasons, but I highly recommend anyone interested in getting fit consider Travis for his acumen and ability to inspire.

SInce working with Jason I have lost over 20lbs I no longer have to take my blood pressure medicine and my last checkup says all my blood work was great. I have tons more energy and I am a lot stronger. He is a miracle worker. I was at a point in my weight loss mission where I could no longer lose any weight and he has helped me in so many ways. If you are looking for a personal trainer he is great. Always on time, friendly, very professional, and knowledgeable in his work.

To start off with, I'm not your typical suburban mom. I don't enjoy gyms, having brunch or anything like that. I'm a keep to myself, you boss me around & I'll rebel kinda woman. My point? I refused to look into workout programs for many reasons. Didn't want all eyes on me in the gym(for any reason), didn't want to pay $100s on a personal trainer and frankly, I thought I'd refuse to do anything right(because I partially thought I knew better) but my body & activity has changed since I was a teen & COVID just added to my weight issue. I gave in, in the middle of my vacation & looked at thumbtack for personal trainers. I love so much that it's virtual(also because I have a child in virtual learning), I can do workouts on my time & my favorite part... I have someone there to help me create better food habits or anything, anytime because I can always text my trainer! I take pictures of my food(never thought I'd do that! Ha!), I get asked questions about how much i ate, what fat % and suggestions on how to make my favorite foods healthier! I even got behind on my workouts(stress & ugh working out) by a couple days & I got a text saying "let's try to get a workout in today"... Yeah... Ok ookkaaayyy. I got it done & I honestly feel good about it. It's customized around what I'm comfortable with but still pushed. I only give 4 stars because my trainer was almost non-existent feedback at first but she's getting better & with only been with this program for 3 weeks... I don't have much to go on. I do enjoy it... Just gotta somehow find the motivation sometimes. BTW! You start to feel very guilty eating foods you know you shouldn't. 😂🤷‍♀️

Before signing up with Jason, I had never worked with a personal trainer before. I didn’t really know what to expect and was a little apprehensive and nervous. All that went away during my first work out with Jason. After that first workout I signed up for 5 more right on the spot. Jason was knowledgeable, patient, friendly and encouraging. He always arrived right on time--the one time he was late due to stopped traffic, he contacted me early, and kept me informed on his ETA; which was only 10-15 minutes late. I would heartily recommend Jason and will be using him again.

As a 45-year old woman, I finally came to the realization that the aging process would be a lot lovelier if I took better care of my body. I literally woke up one day and decided that I wanted to get strong. I met with several personal trainers, and Kristin was the only one who I felt really *heard* me. We started with very basic strength training, and as I began to feel more capable she amped up the workouts accordingly. When I started getting excited about the results, we started talking about diet. In other words, she didn't overwhelm me with too much information at the very beginning; she was very tuned-in to what I needed, *when* I needed it. I have now been working with Kristin for a year and half. And though weight-loss was never my stated goal, I have dropped 3 sizes and gained a lot of muscle. My coordination and balance have improved, too. Our workouts together are always a lot of fun; Kristin is exceedingly cheerful and upbeat, and I look forward to our weekly sessions together.
