Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

I haven’t work with Taylor long, but she has so much energy and positivity! She so easy to talk to, and makes me sweat my butt off in a work out! I know good things are going to come from this! I was so nervous about getting my first personal trainer, but I made the right choice picking Taylor!

Lisa set me up with a phenomenal personal trainer, Lauren. Lauren started out by gaining a thorough understanding of my background and my goals, and then has designed workouts that will help me reach my goals. I look forward to our sessions and leave feeling stronger, more energized, and, taller! My whole day is better after getting started with Lauren.

I cannot say enough good things about Brett. He is an amazing trainer! He teaches by demonstrating first and explains concepts clearly. He is very positive and encouraging, but will not coddle you. (which I prefer and appreciate) I feel like he listened to my personal fitness goals, and has a plan in place to get me there while holding me accountable.

Jason Trammell is a very good personal trainer. I am 59 years old and have Spastic/Dystonic Cerebral Palsy. When I went on Thumbtack to find a trainer (I did say I had Cerebral Palsy), Jason was the only one to reply. Most personal trainers would not know how to work with me, but Jason stepped up to the challenge. I have been work with Jason for over 6 months. Once I talked with him about how my disability affected my muscle movements and balance, he figured out the best way in which to work with me. That said, He doesn’t treat me with “kid gloves”, instead he pushes me to my limit and sometimes beyond. When I feel like can’t do something, he gets me to try and usually he is right. This technique helps by reducing my limits and building my strength. I do need to say that I always feel safe that I will not fall or get hurt, because Jason is always close by to make sure that doesn’t happen! Most people hire trainers for weight loss. I was 10 pounds underweight. Jason made up a food schedule for me and is constantly bugging me about eating more, now I’m only 5 pounds underweight. Strength training is so very important for people, especially woman, over 45 whether or not you have a disability. Working out with Jason will keep me from needing to use a wheelchair or scooter for many years to come, as well as keep me independent in my own home and doing all the regular things everyone else can do. Finally, Jason’s prices are very reasonable. if you look up the cost of joining a gym and having a personal trainer 3-times a week, you will probably be paying twice as much! Plus he comes to your home so you don’t have to go out in the cold and rain in the winter. Anne-Marie Hughey 913-745-6540 (Voice)

I’ve trained for many years and a former bodybuilder. Worked with many trainers and Felton definitely stands out. His approach is simple yet so effective! I was looking for a trainer to help me trim down and get re-focused on my workouts after I fell off for a while. I was used to heavy and intense workouts that led to injuries in the past or rapid weight loss only for weight to rapidly return. Felton has a way to provide great workouts that target very specific muscles and movements that are incredibly challenging. He pays attention during training sessions and is not on the phone or holding side conversations (had previous bad experiences with this). He forces me to let go of the ego of always lifting heavy and focus on building full body balanced strength in a sustainable way. He’s also super helpful when it comes to nutrition. Does not give complex do’s and don’ts and provides common sense guidance. Felton is not only knowledgeable but a living example of his own work. At almost 70 years old, he still competes in body building and personal training. He’s a walking inspiration and all around nice guy!

I was nervous about going to a personal trainer, because I am definitely not the athletic type. Scott put me immediately at ease. It helps that he's older like me and understands the needs of my body. I love the variety of exercises that we do and the care he puts into finding movements that work my body without hurting my joints. I've been going for a month and I already feel stronger and more capable.

I have been training with Turk for about three months now and have had great results after trying to no avail on my own. I am sitting here typing in jeans I had not been able to pull on for a year. I never hired a personal trainer before, so this has been a new experience for me. I was a little nervous about going to a muscle gym, but I saw on the reviews that Turk works with plenty of women (I am mid-40's) so I took a chance. I could not be happier and feel like I really lucked out. Turk is very responsive and listens to what it is that you want to accomplish. He created a very doable plan for me which included explaining how to eat appropriately. I always thought that fruit and lettuce would be how to lose weight and I could not have been more wrong. I have been eating plenty of food while losing weight and fat and building lean muscle. The few times I have texted Turk with the various temptations out in the world, he has responded almost immediately with support and encouragement. If you are planning to work with a personal trainer and are serious about putting in the effort, I would give Turk 6 out of 5 stars...go for it. He is the real deal. You will not be disappointed.

Dan and I have been training together since 05 May 2020, and we've hit a number of goals together along the way. After a lifetime of hating running and many false starts at attempting some distance (more than 5 miles), Dan helped me knock out a half marathon 19 days after we started training together with a regimen of steady distance increases, splitting my training runs, and a focus on refueling and recovering appropriately. Determination helped on my part, but I leaned heavily on Dan's training and recovery expertise. Before training together, my 1 rep max on bench press was 114 lbs and I had long struggled to go heavy. By the end of 2020, I was knocking out 3 sets of 6 reps @ 185 lbs -- well beyond my original goal of hitting a 1 rep max of 162 lbs. As my goals have changed over time, Dan has adapted our training regime. More recently i've taken up capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art, and Dan has adapted our training around the demanding core, shoulder, leg, flexibility, balance, and stamina requirements of capoeira. Dan is punctual and professional, and I love the time we spend together training. He's a great person to bounce ideas off of, and I get to come away from each of our training sessions having been challenged physically and also often intellectually. One of my less concrete goals of working with Dan was to feel better about myself and to feel more at-home in my body. I've never been a particularly capable athlete, and working at a desk throughout my 20s has done me no favors in the category of physical fitness. With Dan's encouragement and guidance, i've been able to crush steadily more challenging workouts. I come away from our lifts feeling more successful, more powerful, and ready to take on the rest of my goals each week. I would recommend Dan to anyone and everyone looking for a personal trainer.

SInce working with Jason I have lost over 20lbs I no longer have to take my blood pressure medicine and my last checkup says all my blood work was great. I have tons more energy and I am a lot stronger. He is a miracle worker. I was at a point in my weight loss mission where I could no longer lose any weight and he has helped me in so many ways. I've been working with Emily for nearly two years. I recommend her completely and without reservation. She must be among the most knowledgeable, encouraging, and professional trainers anywhere. You won't be disappointed if you choose to work with her. When I went in search of a personal trainer, I had no conception of what distinguished a truly excellent trainer from a mediocre one. I tried working with several. What I learned was that some trainers simply have a deep education in the discipline, while others don't. It makes a huge difference. I had no idea what I didn't know. It's not just about being held accountable and encouraged week to week, though that's critical. It's also about the individual's deep knowledge of the body and how it works. Emily does have that education, and she knows how to apply it with encouragement and grace. She builds the body's flexibility and strength comprehensively, from first principles, strategically, over many months. The results I've seen are a testament to it. She knows the subtle ins and outs of every exercise and movement, and she has an eagle eye for problematic form. She follows the unique demands of the client's body. I feel 1000% better than when I started with her, and my flexibility and strength are transformed. It's a pleasure to see her for each and every session, and she is always the consummate professional. Ten stars if I could. Thanks, Emily.

To start off with, I'm not your typical suburban mom. I don't enjoy gyms, having brunch or anything like that. I'm a keep to myself, you boss me around & I'll rebel kinda woman. My point? I refused to look into workout programs for many reasons. Didn't want all eyes on me in the gym(for any reason), didn't want to pay $100s on a personal trainer and frankly, I thought I'd refuse to do anything right(because I partially thought I knew better) but my body & activity has changed since I was a teen & COVID just added to my weight issue. I gave in, in the middle of my vacation & looked at thumbtack for personal trainers. I love so much that it's virtual(also because I have a child in virtual learning), I can do workouts on my time & my favorite part... I have someone there to help me create better food habits or anything, anytime because I can always text my trainer! I take pictures of my food(never thought I'd do that! Ha!), I get asked questions about how much i ate, what fat % and suggestions on how to make my favorite foods healthier! I even got behind on my workouts(stress & ugh working out) by a couple days & I got a text saying "let's try to get a workout in today"... Yeah... Ok ookkaaayyy. I got it done & I honestly feel good about it. It's customized around what I'm comfortable with but still pushed. I only give 4 stars because my trainer was almost non-existent feedback at first but she's getting better & with only been with this program for 3 weeks... I don't have much to go on. I do enjoy it... Just gotta somehow find the motivation sometimes. BTW! You start to feel very guilty eating foods you know you shouldn't. 😂🤷‍♀️

Before signing up with Jason, I had never worked with a personal trainer before. I didn’t really know what to expect and was a little apprehensive and nervous. All that went away during my first work out with Jason. After that first workout I signed up for 5 more right on the spot. Jason was knowledgeable, patient, friendly and encouraging. He always arrived right on time--the one time he was late due to stopped traffic, he contacted me early, and kept me informed on his ETA; which was only 10-15 minutes late. I would heartily recommend Jason and will be using him again.

Gabe was the perfect personal trainer to go with. I had spoken with several trainers when considering who to choose, and while all of them seemed fine, Gabe stuck out as someone who genuinely cared about helping his clients meet their goals. The time and care he spent responding to my initial queries struck me right away. And I'm so glad that I worked with Gabe. In 3 months, he helped me achieve more goals than I had even set out for myself, was a perfect coach who motivated/inspired while also challenged me and taught me. He had great advise, was flexible to accommodate my needs and was hyper focused on helping me achieve my goals. I would STRONGLY recommend anyone to work with Gabe. Don't miss out on a chance to work with someone who (1) is incredibly knowledgeable on the body and how it works, (2) has proven out his approach on himself with both strength and muscle mass, and (3) gives such great care and consideration to his clients. Gabe has given me all the tools I need to continue to excel in my goals. I'm really excited about what the future holds.

Save yourself time and get Dustin already! No need to look any further, he is your guy. Not only does he know what he’s talking about, he looks the part too. I was initially intimidated by someone that had so much muscle, but his gentle, attentive mannerisms quickly put me at ease. He is patient, punctual, informative and very knowledgeable, always kind enough to answer my myriad questions both on and off site. My experience so far has been nothing short of amazing. It’s just my 3rd week working with him and my confidence has already gone up a notch, I have an abundance of energy, my clothes have started to fit me better and the best part yet, I can eat my favorite food (rice) more freely. He is the very epitome of a Personal Trainer and the best investment in myself.
