Chef Kev never seems to amaze me. This year at my annual holiday event, he did an awesome job from setting up to making sure everything was replenished to helping host my guest, which is not required of him. He was very professional, timely and his quality of work was superb! The talk of the evening was his filet mignon stuffed in mini pita sandwiches drizzled with a curry/horseradish sauce and his fresh honey/ginger teriyaki turkey meatballs. As always, I was very impressed with his services and so were my family, friends and many guests. I always hire Chef Kev to cater all of my events.

I am a procrastinator by nature so as usual my wife's birthday was fast approaching and I needed to figure out what gift I can give her at the last minute. After years of being together in my mind I felt that I was running out of creative gifts to give her until I was browsing online about what to give women who are 5 months pregnant for their birthday. Then it it hit me let me see if I can have a personal chef come to house and cook for the family. Upon looking online and searching through the vast number of chefs, Chef Serge Pambo Executive chef and owner of Pure Kitchen Culinary Concept caught my attention for a couple of reasons; he had quite a number of reviews and his price was reasonable. Additionally when I looked at his website Sergepambo.com his resume was complete with a number of experiences which assured me that we would have a quality experience and indeed we did. The first reason I was impressed was his quick response time, I wanted a chef to come on a Sunday and began looking two days prior. I also wanted to pay him prior to the experience but he insisted that we pay after we had our meal. Upon arrival he was punctual, friendly, and flexible (our kitchen was small and the ventilation was not the best also it was four adults including my pregnant wife and our 2 and a half year old son). Chef Pambo came prepared with his cooking equipment and as soon as he arrived began to work. This was my first experience having a chef so I was a little ignorant of the protocol and did not know if we should talk to him to keep him company while he cooked or leave him alone but he was more than willing to engage in conversation which created a relaxed environment. The first meal was an appetizer shrimp wrapped with bacon which was delicious and hit the spot for everyone especially my pregnant wife. The next meal comprised of creamy palinta, salmon seared on one side and oven baked on the other, along with tender and well seasoned beef, lightly saltaued asparagus, potato wedges, and we topped the meal off with bread pudding with ice cream over wafers. In between each meal Chef Pambo provided us with a layout of each course, history of the meal as well as his culinary training, and other interesting facts about his journey. After we were full of joy because due to the meal the chef even washed the dishes and cleaned the kitchen so it was as spotless or even more so than when he came to the home. I highly recommend Chef Pambo the quality of his food was outstanding, his professionalism is second to none, and his service versatility makes him uniquely qualified to be one of the best chefs among his peers. He has cooked all around the world, written books, can cater to any number of people or situations, and continues to travel the world to keep his skills sharp. He is a five star chef and I highly recommend you experience the culinary genuis of Chef Pambo executive chef of Pure Kitchen Culinary Concept.

We had such a wonderful, perfect experience with Chef Diane! Not only was the food fantastic, but she was so easy-going, it really relaxed our "guest of honor" (my mom) who was accustomed to doing the cooking and cleaning, and a bit out of her element to relinquish control!:) All of the food was perfect, but all of us are still dreaming of Diane's Red Velvet scratch cake! We each had a piece for leftovers the next day, and couldn't stop raving about it! Will definitely use her again and recommend her to friends. Thanks, Diane!!

Chef Chris Spear is in one word, amazing. If I didn't limit myself to one word, I'd also add in: incredible, talented, entertaining, knowledgeable, friendly, intelligent, thoughtful, creative, and brilliant. My wife and I just had our third son a month prior, and it was her birthday and we were not able to go out and celebrate due to the wonderful chaos of having a new little one tethered to mom. Chris was able to bring more than just the restaurant experience to us with this incredible service he provides. We learned new cooking techniques, flavor combinations, recipes that are easy for weekly meal making with little-to-no time, and more. As advertised, Chris brought everything: the ingredients, the dishes, the serving ware, the napkins and place settings; EVERYTHING. And then he took it all home with him. Chris spent almost a solid 5 hours with us and never made us feel rushed or hurried throughout the whole experience. He explained all his dishes, discussed the ingredients with us, gave us his perspective and thoughts on the dish, all while giving us stories about his own personal life and family and how he got to where he is today. He clearly loves what he does and it shows through on the food. My wife and I cannot wait to remake the dishes, and have already started looking at new cookware that Chris recommended. Chris even gave us links and recommendations for recipes that were not part of the meal experience we had signed up for. Chris clearly cares about the food and experience first, which is beyond refreshing and hopefully what helps set him above other chefs. We have told both of our entire families and friends about this experience and could not recommend Chris more. I hope people believe us and take the opportunity to have a similarly amazing experience with Chris. Ours was truly a great experience, and for that, the least we can do is say THANK YOU to Chef Chris!

We were 2 families with 4 little ones between us on vacation in a rental home. Since going to a restaurant at 5 pm with 4 kids under 4 isn't exactly relaxing, we hired Chef Jackie to prepare an adult meal. It was great- we fed the kids early, then as we were prepping and putting our kids to bed, Chef Jackie came in and prepared. After a sunset cocktail, we had a wonderful 5-star meal. Jackie was super with working around our dietary restrictions - one allergy and one vegetarian, all while providing top restaurant-quality food and delivery. It was as if we did go to a restaurant, without the hassle of dressing up, traveling or finding a babysitter. Hiring Chef Jackie was one of the highlights of our vacation. If we are in the area again, I will definitely re-hire. Highly recommend!

How do you plan a reception for 500-600 people where approximately 200 of them are famished teenagers or preteens? The answer: you contact Esther Marandure, Executive Chef, of the Epicurean Nutrition Catering Company. Ester, thank you, thank you, thank you all for the wonderful work you did to make the reception after the Northern Virginia Youth Winds December Concert a smashing success. I cannot tell you how many people have said this was one of the best receptions they had been to. The food was excellent and beautifully presented as I knew it would be after attending the tasting. Many people remarked how wonderful it was. The staff was also so delightful to work with, all very friendly and attentive. Please make certain that they all know how much they were appreciated. Your young man and the young lady are truly gracious hosts, professionally attired, helpful, and courteous; their manner speaks well of their home and family. NVYW will use your services again and without reservation, recommends your services. We have already done so. The very best of luck with your endeavors. Scott is fantastic and continually goes above and beyond. We planned our 25 person wedding weekend entirely from out of town, and couldn't have done it without Scott. From our first emails and Skype conversations, Scott made us feel heard and cared for -- something we definitely did not feel from the other four chefs we met with. He provided clear menu options and helped tailor the perfect selections, including accommodating our halal and vegetarian guests. Months later, our guests are still raving about the meal Scott prepared and entire experience he delivered. Beyond catering the evening, Scott and his team helped us evaluate the venue, find and acquire the linens & place settings, pick out & deliver flowers, and purchase food for the rest of the weekend. We highly recommend Scott as both a chef and as a trusted advisor with a big heart.

I would give Nasrin six stars if I could. She agreed to prepare dinner for two on the occasion of my wife's birthday. Over the course of 10-days of planning she consistently demonstrated creativity, flexibility, and reliability. On the night of the surprise dinner, she produced a delicious feast of regional dishes, in generous quantities. My wife was surprised and delighted, so I couldn't have been happier. Highly recommended!

I was absolutely thrilled with the services. I used the chef services for a Valentines Day dinner for my wife and I. The food was delicious. The menu was personalized and put together based on what I asked for. Pricing was very reasonable as well. Most importantly, she was very personable and great to work with. I would highly recommend and will absolutely be hiring her services again.

Sandra is the best chef I have ever experienced. Everything about the event FAR exceeded my expectations. She added special touches such as a printed menu, ice cubes with edible flowers inside, had her staff take pictures. I will never consider another caterer ever again. Pure perfection!

We used their personal Chef service to have a romantic cadle light dinner. In one word: Amazing. The meal was Michelin Star worthy as the time and attention that went into every detail allowed my wife and I to totally relax having to do absolutely nothing. What also impressed me was the clean up. When they left, the kitchen was spick and spam clean. The experience was so good that we are already thinking about hiring them again for an upcoming Holliday party. And lastly, as anyone reading a review wants to know, the price was extremely fair, as they gave us choices to match the amount we were willing to pay; so we both had an incredible meal worth every penny for the price we paid. We highly recomend you choose Hautz Eatz!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
