Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Chat with the best tile specialists to find out how long it will take to install a backsplash in your home.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

I accepted the work but was not pleased with the results. Walls not level and plumb, grout left on tiles, tiles uneven, 1 inch grouped instead of a tile near ceiling. I would not recommend.

Update:: Now the tiles started breaking. =========================== I hired John for doing tile in kitchen, hallway and powder room. He is hardworking and a nice guy. But he does not have the skill and patience to do the tile work. Some tiles came out very well but there are lot of uneven tiles all around. He did not do a thorough job covering the area before the tile demo and there is dust everywhere. But thats not the reason for this review. I can clean the dust. Some grout lines are larger than others, some tiles are higher than others and some grouts are deeper than others. I am planning to hire some one from yelp to fix this. And the cleanup was so-so after the work. I would not recommend him for tile related work but he should be good for wood flooring. I feel bad writing this for this nice guy but thats the reality.

Absolutely outstanding work from Phil and his team. Had my tile and grout cleaned and sealed after renovation work. They were able to clean dirty tile and remove all paint splatter and stains. I would call these guys again in a heart beat for tile and grout cleaning.

Adam did a fantastic job of installing the tile at my entrance and along the fireplace floor. First he had to remove the existing tile and he made sure dust did not get all over my home. It was a messy job and the tile butted up right next to the fireplace stone which made the job fairly intricate. Posted are the finished work and the tile looks great. He was exceptionally good at detail and I highly recommend him!

We had David and his team remodel two bathrooms for us. Throughout the whole process, they were very professional, kept a clean work environment, had great suggestions, and were a pleasure to work with. David said they would take a week per shower, and they delivered, big time. The Master Bath got a new tile shower, with a difficult mosaic tile back wall and accents, along with a nook, and really cool drain that drains around one of the tiles. We got new tile on the floor, and the vanity area replaced. The second bathroom got new tile above the tub, a nook, new tile on the floor and the vanity and mirrors replaced. All materials and techniques were state of the art, and Schluter Systems products were used throughout.

Shay is very knowledgable regarding the care of tile, grout. She will be coming back to finish this bathroom and then my kitchen. Evidently, the contractors I used never sealed these two tile areas.

My brick fireplace needed to be refreshed and I decided to have it tiled. Sean was quick to respond and provided a reasonable quote and was able to order the tile I choose. He provided photos of fireplaces he had completed. They were beautiful and mine turned out equally as beautiful. I would highly recommend Sean for all of your tile needs!

Edward did an excellent job on my tile project. I had some tiles that needed to be replaced as they thin set used when they were set over 10 years ago fell apart. He made them look as if they were the same tiles. I would definitely hire him as he is extremely professional and did a great job.

I was fortunate to have Alex perform a tile repair project in a bathroom tub enclosure. He's an artist and an expert on tile and all structural code requirements. Alex went below the tile surface and upgraded the structural and water integrity of the enclosure and applied moisture barriers and provided several explanations throughout the process. We've also discussed some other larger projects that I would like completed and hope that he will be the one available to do the renovations. Alex would be my go to person for 'ANY' tiling jobs in the near future. A gentleman and an expert. Thanks

Steve did a great job at installing a very difficult "lantern" style tile in the kitchen that needed many difficult to make cuts. Tile went from countertop to cabinets, or to ceiling in one area. Steve was reliable and communicated his status consistently, and completed the job quickly. He also kept the job area clean and neat, and did his tile cuts outside of the house which was much appreciated.

Dennis is great! I hired him to install some tile in our kitchen where a previous homeowner had removed the backsplash to put in a window, but never finished the job. He was quick to respond, gave a reasonable quote, gave me some suggestions about where to look for tile to match the rest of the kitchen, and even tried to find the tile himself. Once I found/ordered the tile, he made himself available on a Saturday to install it. He showed up on time, did an excellent job, finished in just a few hours, and cleaned up afterward. I hope to use him again when we remodel our bathroom.

Jaime of Eagle Tile & Stone went above and beyond! He did a beautiful tiling job of my balcony and grouted my downstairs shower. My previous contractor had jackhammered my balcony (his name was Robert Rembiszewski - stay away from him!) and went too far. Jaime was able to fix the problem. Jaime was professional and fairly priced and his work is beautiful! I will hire him again for any future tiling projects. (I've attached photos , please ignore the dirty walls, they will be painted!)

Shay just spent three hours rejuvenating the tile and grout in my bathroom and it looks magnificent! As she describes herself, she is a perfectionist and she went above and beyond to make sure everything was cleaned, protected and revitalized. She also gave me great tips on how to keep the grout and tile in tip top shape going forward. A+ work and service.
