I hired Pour la France for catering services for my daughter's sweet 16th Birthday event and I'm proud to say things went very well. A few things to call out about Pour la France are: 1) Customer Service: I worked with BoJames (Bo) on menu options for this event and Bo was extremely helpful and delivered excellent customer service throughout the process. I was provided with a couple of menu's to choose from and what I liked most was that the menu's provided allowed for me to be flexible with my options. 2) Food delivery: The food ordered was delivered on time (despite the snow) and at the end of the night, the Pour la France crew arrived on-time to pick up the items they delivered. This was a big deal for me as I needed the venue cleaned by the end of the night and having the team be there on time to help with clean up was a big help. 3) Food Quality: Each of the items I ordered tasted great and came with great quality! 4) Food Quantity/Portion Sizes: This category is the only reason I'm giving Pour la France a 4 instead of 5 star rating. Although I worked with Bo on my menu options, I did expect the portion sizes to be a little more robust than what they were. However, I only ordered from the Appetizer and HD menu's so part of the blame is on me for not fully asking the question of whether or not the food I ordered would be enough for a room size of 50 - 60 people. All-in-all I would recommend Pour la France's services and I will likely use them again for future events.

Thomas was wonderful. The food was delicious, the prep and cleanup impeccable, and his personality warm and friendly. It was a graduation party for our son and his friends. Not only did Thomas and Joelle do a great job catering, he even shared grilling techniques with the group. I would definitely hire him again.

Lisa showed up on time and set up an appealing display of delicious food. There were about 100 people at the event and a number of them commented on how great the food was. She returned on time to clean up. She was very easy to work with and was responsive to my questions and concerns. I would definitely recommend her catering services to others

I enjoyed working with this catering company! The food was pretty good and the catering delivery had the challenge of getting the food out & presentable very quietly, which went well. I had to take a star off because the chicken was undercooked on the two meals set aside for our folks with dietary restrictions and delivery on the second day was about 20 minutes late. Overall, the experience was good and I will keep them in the list of caterers for future events.

Chef Tim does a great job. His attention to detail is top notch. I use Scorching Brick's delivery service and had always been 100% satisfied. On Saint Patrick's day he prepared a briskette corned beef sandwich with a unique twist on cabbage compliment. I also has the crab poboy. Again, he used interesting spices and engrediences that enhanced the flavor of the crab without over powering it. Loved every bite. I highly recommend Chef Tim and Scorching Brick.

We contacted 3 Chicks Kitchen for catering a birthday party. The catering menu didn't match up with the regular restaurant menu and we wanted to try out the dishes before committing. Sandy had us come over one afternoon after the restaurant closed and we were able to taste everything that we were considering for our event. Sandy was interested in our feedback about taste, texture, and asked us what our preferences were. She took notes about our special requests and got back to us within a day or two with a quote. Sandy has been very responsive and helpful. We look forward to 3 Chicks Kitchen's help with this event.

Magnifique Catering was truly that... Magnifique! the food (all four courses) and desserts were all amazing! Their chef, Durosola, was unbelievably professional from the start, and even put leftovers in our fridge. We froze the containers and had them that next weekend. Yum!

My experience with Off the Menu Catering couldn't have gone better! I was hosting a work event around the holidays and needed a selection of small BBQ plates that everyone attending could enjoy. Cameron and Alan went above and beyond to satisfy my requests, and the food was absoloutely delicious (the pulled pork sliders, chicken wings, and jalapeno cheese cornbread were my favorites!) My only complaint is that I didn't ask for more! Even though we just needed the food dropped off and set up, they were still very professional and helpful all around in making sure the food was perfect from beginning to end. I will certainly use them again in the future!

Copacabana Grill was great to work with! I am from the University of Wyoming and am part of an RSO, so we were on a budget. Regis was very willing to work with us, and very generous, and was understanding of the politics that is bringing a caterer to a university campus. The food was incredibly delicious, like mmmm. It was very good food and very fresh, and he was able to make enough food for 400+ people. It was really cool because he brought a grill and grilled the food outside of our Student Union. So, the smells for guests coming in were a nice addition to the atmosphere. He was very professional to work with on the day of and leading up to it. Overall, I think I speak for my whole committee when I say that we would definitely recommend Copacabana Grill for your catering needs.

Trisha's services are amazing! She can cook anything and make it really tasty. She's been cooking for us on a weekly basis for over 3 years. My 3- year old also loves her. Her strength lies in her ability to cater to all the various food needs & requests that may exist within a family. My husband & I both have unique tastes when it comes to food. I eat spicy food and he likes your basic American cuisine. Trisha has been able to cater to both our needs for the last 3 years. She has also cooked healthy, tasty gluten-free meals for us when we requested it Try her out, She won't disappoint.

I have had the pleasure of having Veronica's cooking many times. Most recently, Veronica catered my bridal shower. The food was not only delicious- but the detail that went into making each dish beautiful was incredibly impressive. The guests that attended the shower raved about the food for weeks after the event. Every dish Veronica makes, she puts a ton of love in and it really is reflected in the final product. I cannot recommend her enough.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
