Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a plumber during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If possible, it’s best to set up a virtual consultation or phone call with a plumber near during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can send a message to a professional plumber near you and ask if they are available to video chat or have a phone call. Use that time to discuss the work that needs to be done. Make sure to ask any questions you have about the project. And lastly, ask the plumber how they handle payments and whether they have any specific safety precautions in place to comply with social distancing.

How can I find out if a plumber is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Generally, plumbers are often considered essential service providers. Essential service providers vary from state to state and city to city, however. For the most accurate information, check your official state or city government website to see whether a plumber is considered an essential service in your area.

Read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a plumber when social distancing?

Contact plumbers near you beforehand to see if they can complete the project without entering your home — for example, by entering the garage to fix a broken water heater. If the plumber needs to enter your house to do the job, you should proceed only if both parties feel comfortable with the project. Consider taking extra steps such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing common areas.

Can I use digital payments to pay for plumbing services?

Some plumbers accept digital payments -- Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, etc. -- for their services. Before you hire a plumber, ask them if they accept your preferred online payment. Many also feature digital payment options on their profiles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, digital payments are typically considered safer than cash and credit cards.

Does a plumber need to enter my home?

A plumber will need to enter your home to fix plumbing issues like dripping faucets, clogged sinks or toilets and leaky pipes. They might not need to come into your home if the faulty appliance is located outdoors or in the garage. Before you begin the project, contact plumbers near you to find out they will need to enter your home.

Do plumbers offer remote or virtual services?

If you see a profile that states the plumber is offering remote services, contact the plumber before hiring them to see what those services include. Although plumbing is a job that has to be done in-person, you can ask them if they offer virtual consultations or an online walk-through.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What happens when a water pipe bursts?

When a pipe bursts, the water can cause indoor flooding and damage your home. If the pipe is in an accessible location, you will likely notice puddles of water right away. However, if the pipe is underground or behind a wall, it may cause reduced water pressure, a sulfur smell or discolored water. All of this can cause significant (and expensive) damage, which is why you should always contact a plumber near you if you suspect your pipes are leaking.

What do you do if you have a burst pipe?

First, switch off the water supply to reduce the water damage. You should also turn off the electricity for the part of your home that has sustained the leak, as it can be extremely dangerous if the water comes into contact with an electrical socket. Next, drain the remaining water from your faucets so it doesn’t freeze inside the pipes.

Once you’ve done all of this, search for qualified plumbers in your area and ask them to provide you with a quote.

How much does it cost to repair a broken pipe?

The national average cost to repair broken pipes ranges from $120 to $170. Prices can vary depending on the type of damage, whether the pipe is easily accessible, the materials needed and where the pipe is located. For example, an exposed pipe under the sink will likely cost much less than a pipeline in your yard that requires digging.

Your overall cost will also depend on the hourly rate of the contractor. Most plumbers charge between $60 and $65 per hour for standard pipe repair, and up to $95 per hour for complex plumbing work.

This was my first use of Thumbtack. The questions that helped me describe my plumbing problem and urgency of need were very well organized and easy to understand. (Thank you, Thumbtack.) Gregory's Plumbing responded by phone in less than an hour. Gregory and his assistant Mike came to my home within 24 hours of my call. He listened well to my description of the history of the plumbing problem, diagnosed it accurately, and they completed the work in about 60 minutes. They cleaned up the workspace before leaving. The rate that I was charged was reasonable. Highly recommended.

I purchased my home in June and the first water bill was in excess of $1100.00. After consulting a variety of plumbing companies, I decided to hire Plumb Masters of Atlanta. I am extremely pleased with the outcome. Andrew installed a new water line from the meter to my home and did so in such a professional manner. Andrew’s work is meticulous and professional and his work ethic is beyond reproach. I will definitely recommend Plumb Masters of Atlanta to anyone who needs a plumber, not just a regular plumber, but an exceptional one! Andrew’s work speaks volumes.

He was a plumbing lifesaver! What started out as a possible blockage, turned into a full sewer line emergency. The past owners had cut the sewer line and never reattached it to the main. He spent 5 days finding the line, the main, and getting rid of 70 year old piping to let us use our water again. He worked long hours and got it done really well. I would recommend him for any plumbing job and hire him again for any future issues.

PNG plumbing is my go to company with the great service I received. Phil listened to my needs for this hot water heater replacement and recirculating pump. He discussed with me in detail about the products that it would take to do the job. Received a fair price for their service. Plumbers showed up on time and had a great plan to get the equipment installed in a very workman like manner. They were very courteous and friendly young men. I would highly recommend PNG plumbing for their services to anyone.

I'd called Gordon plumbing from out of state to take a bad scenario with a re-bath tub and to install a new one. He gave a fair price and showed as promise. He encountered some problems along the way from dealing with thick molding around a cast iron tub in an 65 year old home.He explained the process along the way and help minimized the cost. After completing the job, he was nice enough to recommed someone to finish and tile my wall. Honest, dependable work, it's refreshing. Gordon plumbing is the one to call.

If I could rate zero stars I definitely would. This guy made me wait around all day and kept promising he was on his way to handle our emergency plumbing issues. After waiting for 6 hours for him to show, he stopped responding to my calls and text. Do not waste your time on this clown. He’s rude, unprofessional and a liar.

Mike and Andre were consummate professionals! They quoted us less than half what the other guys did, walked us through the whole process, showed up immediately when we needed them, and were incredible from beginning to end. We asked their advice for another plumbing project and will most likely be having them back in the next few days to complete that one too!! I can not recommend them enough!

CJ Services did a fantastic job replacing our cast iron drain lines with PVC piping at an affordable price. When we discovered the leak, CJ came out to our home immediately to assess the issues and gave us a fair quote. He worked diligently to get the job done quickly so we could restore plumbing to our home, but he also took time and care to ensure the job was done right. Thank you for a job well done!

Miguel did an excellent job replacing three toilets for me. The vanity I purchased didn't fit the space so he put my old sink back. Also the people that installed my flooring broke off a pipe under one of the toilets on the first floor and just put the toilet back over it. He repaired the pipe as well for a very reasonable price. He left the areas he worked in cleaner than they were before he started. Would definitely hire again for plumbing projects

From the moment they came to the door Keith and team are very professional and knowledgeable in regards to all aspects of plumbing. He and team resolved my issue and went above and beyond what he came out to do. If you do not give Keith the opportunity to earn your business you are doing yourself and injustice because it is hard to find honest people who can do the job right, make a living while also staying with in your budget. I highly recommend and will only be using Keith and team here on out and in the future.
