Jen catered our wedding. She and her team were fantastic! Jen was warm and accommodating throughout the planning, preparing, catering, and cleaning process. What a joy and pleasure during an ex citing and streetlights time. And she was a trooper on a hot and humid July day when the oven gave out! They shuttled back and forth to a neighbor 's house using their kitchen too! None of the guests knew there was a problem. The food was fabulous, light, summer perfect. Lemon sole, chicken marsala, huge antipasto boat, strawberry shortcake. I think her coconut shrimp were an especially big hit. Hire her! Hire her! Hire her! She's the best! You won't be sorry.

We had a house party that was for about 35 guests and we hired Daniel for the catering. It was the best decision we made! The food was amazing, from the hot appetizers to the main courses (chicken, beef) to the variety of desserts- it was all delicious. I couldn't believe how many guests commented about the food and the presentation. And the presentation was certainly unique- he served the entrees in giant martini glasses so that we could stand and mill about while holding food. Fantastic idea. Daniel first came over to our house to check out the layout and kitchen and we went over the menu and how we were going to set everything up. This helped to make sure that everything on the day of the party went smoothly. He had a server (his daughter) and she was such a huge help and worked very hard. Together, they took care of everything related to the food - everything! All the food was fresh and cooked right in the kitchen so we weren't eating reheated food. They not only cooked here and served, but they took care of the clean up and packaged and put away all the extra food for us. They took all the stress away from planning a party and we were left to enjoy ourselves. We had so many people we hadn't seen for years that it was wonderful to just relax and enjoy the conversation and food with them. I can't recommend Daniel highly enough. We would definitely hire him again!

As an executive assistant, I am responsible for hosting many customer meetings for our US and international guests. Hostess Catering has always gone above and beyond, and every time Hostess caters our events, our guest have commented on the quality of both the food and the service. I have also used Hostess for family events, and again, excellent quality, service, and ideas for making my order even better! I highly recommend Hostess Catering. They make me look like the star of the show. And let me mention, they are not only professional, but kind and lovely to work with!

William has been providing personal chef services for my family for a few months now. I can't say enough positive things about him as well as his food! It is like bringing a five star chef into your home. William's food is superb - expertly made, beautifully prepared and plated (if you want) and delicious. William is a pleasure to have in our home as well and works with you to develop the menu and is open to suggestions and feedback. I would highly recommend him for catering and personal chef services.

Chef Marty Malone was invaluable to the success of my backyard wedding reception in June. From start to finish he was easy to work with, professional and accommodating to changing requirements. The food was delicious, including the kabobs that were grilled on site, and the staff and service were excellent. I would gladly use Malone catering again.

Ken was so great. He was polite, easy to work with and clearly has been doing this for a while - he really knows how to cook! The food was completely affordable and so delicious! All the guests were raving about it! He came early to set things up and told me how to serve the food, and it all went off seamlessly. I would hire him again in a heartbeat and highly recommend him for any catering needs!

I used Lori's catering services for a small get together and birthday party for about 30 people. Since I was a novice at party giving, Lori was very good about checking in with me along the way and making suggestions about both the menu and the setup. We had more than enough food which had been a particular worry of mine since I could not picture amounts. The party was for noon on a Sunday and I elected to do sort of a blend between a brunch and a lunch. In particular, the strata, mango salad and berry fruit salad were the most popular and I found that the dressings, sauces and spreads that accompanied the food were what added to the uniqueness of the ham, rolls and other salads. Everything was tasty and fresh. The delivery person was on time and helpful with food placement as it was a buffet style. The dishes were all set to go on platters and we supplied the serving utensils and beverages. I would certainly recommend Lori for whatever occasion you might need these services.

Working with Natural Foods was an absolute pleasure. From the initial contact through to the end, it was so easy. I was looking for a caterer for my housewarming party of 60. I really appreciated the focus on sustainable & seasonal. I was able to give Mr. Sawicki the framework of what I was looking for and he created such a unique & varied menu, I really felt like he listened and delivered on the party I was trying to create. My friends raved about the stuffed figs and amazing entrees! (the fish was amazing!) It was so easy to enjoy my party and so stress free. Professional, unique and you could see all the special touches. Natural Foods will be catering more of my parties, now I just need to have more reasons for parties!

Her attention to detail was noticed by all my guests who immediately took her card! The beautifully presentation means as much to Kendra as how delicious her food is. I hired Good Food Catering for a shower in my home for approximately 25 people. I was offered a variety of appetizers and dinner items to choose from. The food was timely delivered, set up, served and cleared without interrupting the shower whatsoever. Most of all, the food was delicious! My guests really enjoyed the variety and there was plenty of food for seconds which many took advantage of. I was able to enjoy the shower and not worry about the food, serving or clean up!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

        • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
        • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
        • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
        • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
        • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
        • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
