Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why is my air conditioner leaking water?

An air conditioner leaking inside the house is a common problem. It could indicate that the air filter is dirty. Or, one of the following may be the culprit:

  • Clogged condensate drain line
  • Leaky, damaged, cracked or rusted drain pan
  • Dirty or broken coils
  • Frozen evaporator coils
  • Broken condensate pump
  • Not enough refrigerant
  • Disconnected drain line

If your AC is leaking, contact a repair service to find out what the problem is — and how much it will cost to fix it.

Is it worth it to install central air?

Depending on where you live, it might be worth it to install central air. Central air makes your house comfortable on hot summer days. And although it’s hard to predict if adding central air will increase your home’s value, prospective homebuyers will certainly notice if it’s missing.

Another advantage of central air is that it can help dehumidify your home. Not only will it make your home more comfortable and enjoyable, but it can also  help prevent mold from growing or spreading.

Contact the best HVAC contractors near you to learn more about the central air installation process and to start receiving free estimates.

Can I install central air myself?

While you may be able to do some preparation work for central air installation, you should hire a licensed contractor to complete the project and handle the air conditioning refrigerants.

Also, unless you have the proper credentials, you risk making common mistakes when installing central air. This may include installing the wrong-size furnace, improperly installing ductwork and exhaust systems, and incorrectly managing drainage.

To ensure your central air is installed correctly, contact the best HVAC pros near you and start getting free estimates today.

Does central air add value to a home?

A central air unit or HVAC system may add value to your home. Or, if you’re in the process of selling your home, it may help you close a sale.

The Remodeling Impact report found that 20% of realtors have suggested that home sellers replace their HVAC before attempting to sell their homes, and 7% said this project did help close a sale.

Talk with an expert to figure out if adding an HVAC system is a good idea for your home. And contact the best HVAC pros near you to get free estimates so you’ll know how much this project will cost you.

Does an HVAC technician need to enter my home?

Because most HVAC systems are located in the home, it’s likely that an HVAC technician would need to enter yours when working on the projects. However, there might be exceptions. Some HVAC systems are located in garages or in areas of the house that are sectioned off. During the consultation, ask your technician if they'll need to enter your home.

When you contact local technicians, ask if they’ll perform a video call in place of a traditional consultation. Be sure to send all materials like photos and documents digitally, and comply with all relevant guidelines.

Do HVAC technicians offer remote or virtual services?

Because HVAC technicians need to be physically present to do their work, they have not conventionally offered remote or virtual services. However, with the importance of social distancing due to COVID-19, the need for remote capabilities is greater than ever. If you come across a profile that states the HVAC technician or AC professional is offering remote services, message the pro to find out what those services include.

Consult with your technician to see if the technician will be able to perform a video call consultation. You can find local technicians near you by searching online.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a HVAC technician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a safe consultation or appointment with an HVAC technician during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by comparing technicians in your area in an online search. Message or call technicians to ask whether they can perform a consultation over the phone or even over a video call. This way, they can assess the problem without increasing the risk of virus transmission by visiting your house.

If it turns out the service is essential, you’ll need to follow CDC guidelines as well as local government guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an HVAC technician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a technician for an HVAC repair or installation project, practice current social distancing guidelines. This may require remaining outside while the technician works or ensuring the technician can work in a sectioned-off area or outbuilding.

Comply with social distancing guidelines while the technician is performing work. Do not make physical contact with technicians, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, sanitize all involved spaces and surface and pay using a digital platform instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for central air conditioning services?

The use of digital payment platforms -- like Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle, Venmo and Square Cash -- is common among air conditioning technicians. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is improving the adoption of these platforms as a means of helping social distancing.

As you compare local air conditioning technicians online, contact them to see if they’ll accept digital payments. Also, discuss strategies for completing the job while complying with safety guidelines for reducing the risk of exposure.

How can I find out if an HVAC technician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Currently, governments on both the federal and local levels are updating guidelines on what qualifies as an essential service. To see whether an HVAC technician is considered an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic, check your city or state’s government website.

For federal guidelines, check CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which identifies 16 critical infrastructure sectors during the crisis. But note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Herb was thorough servicing the HVAC System. Prior to contacting him, I was informed the HVAC system needed to be replaced. Not so, says Herb Chiposi at NexGen. He cleaned the coils, drained the excess water from the condensation pipe and installed a new filter allowing the system to run efficiently! Even better, he did a follow up visit the next day to make sure all was well. Herb is rare in his profession. You'll be in the most capable hands making NexGen your HVAC provider!

I contacted Gomez AC on a Monday and Tomas inspected our house the same afternoon. He patiently explained what needed to be done and why it would not make sense to solely replace the broken AC and leave the old furnace in place. The price he quoted was so reasonable that I did not even bother shopping around for alternative estimates. The crew arrived on time and replaced our entire HVAC system. Afterwards, he showed me what exactly they had done. Communication was good throughout. I will definitely re-hire Gomez AC for all our future HVAC needs and strongly recommend that you do the same.

Well, I can’t say enough about what an excellent experience I have had with MVM. Beginning with Mauricio immediately responding to my inquiry/work request, up until the project was completed less than three days later, the process couldn’t have gone more smoothly. Within hours of my inquiry, he was at my house and diagnosed the problem within five minutes. He returned a couple of days later and finished replacing my coils and outside unit (for an amazing supercharged energy efficient model) in one day. He was considerate about keeping his distance and keeping his mask on because of COVID. Removal of old HVAC unit was also immediate and painless. I will only call Mauricio for future HVAC work. I’ve also already referred him to a friend with similar air conditioning issues. Bravo, Mauricio.. And thanks!!

Kay responded promptly, and offered next day appointment. When I asked him to come earlier, he arrived early, checked the system, addressed the issue and offered the best way to fix it. He fixed the problem, finished his job in less than 2 hours and offered 30 days guarantee. It was a hassle free, relaxing experience. I will hire him again and will introduce him to anyone that needs HVAC service. Thank you!

Writing this review two weeks later, and new system’s working like a charm! Dexter with KPK was the consummate professional. We needed a new HVAC system installed in upstairs. Of all the contractors, he was the only one who showed up exactly on the dot without delay or excuse (compared to the “Angie’s List” guys). He gave a fair assessment, explained everything, and gave a very fair price. Even with some hurdles of our specific system, he was able to troubleshoot and problem solve on the spot. He will make sure the system is installed perfectly so that it works efficiently (meaning more $ in your pocket in the long term). Thank you, Dexter

Nestor was responsive to calls/texts/appointments! From the day he gave me a quote for a new heat pump system I could tell he cared for his customers and didn't just want to sell a whole new hvac system. He was actually looking to save me money! He replaced my forced air A/C and Electric Furnace with a more efficient heat pump. The house feels so much better and I know I'm paying a fraction of what I paid before. Hire Nestor, you won't be disappointed with his professionalism, knowledge and customer service. He can give you my contact info if you need more convincing!

Julian is a true professional and you can't go wrong hiring him for your HVAC needs. Our AC died on the hottest weekend of the summer. I frantically reached out to Nero Heating & Air on Saturday night and I received a response in minutes. He was able to stop by our house first thing Sunday AM and diagnosis the issue immediately. (He even offered to come Saturday night if I felt the heat was unbearable!) He took the time to explain all of our options and taught me a short term fix to jump start the compressor until we could replace it. His approach is informative with expert recommendation and no pressure. By Tuesday afternoon we had a new unit with a price we felt was very fair and install service that exceeded our expectations. I will be recommending Julian to our friends and neighbors.
