Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Agnese is a great personal trainer! My wife and I have been training with her since April of this year (once a week). We have had weight loss, increased muscle and a stronger core. Agnese really takes the time to get to know her clients and their expectations. You can guarantee that you are always going to get a great workout with each session. You will definitely see results!

I have always been reluctant to get a personal trainer because I thought I could do it myself; not to mention it was very costly. After months of frustration not seeing the results I expected, I decided to post on Thumbtack to get pricing for personal training. I received multiple calls and emails from various trainers in the area. Robert, from Fitness Stop, called with detailed information about his weight loss and strength training plan. Because of the information he provided, and I can assure you the other trainers did not give me this information, I was convinced I needed to meet with him for an initial assessment. After 6 weeks of following his plan, I've lost a little over 4% body fat and gained lean muscle mass. Not only do I feel healthier and more energetic, I've lost weight and inches! I've worked with majority of their trainers, and they are all amazing! Each workout is different to prevent your body from hitting a plateau. Not only that, but it breaks of the monotony of the average mundane workout. I would 110% recommend Fitness Stop for not only weight loss but overall improvement of health.

Three sessions in, Shawn has shown great professionalism and knowledge of the personal training industry. Paired with his Gladiator Strong suggested nutrition, I already feel a difference in my energy and have lost 5 lbs.! He motivates, tolerates my constant complaining, is accommodating in terms of location, and of 3 other personal trainers I've had in my lifetime, I finally did proper push-ups with the correct form. He smartly combines cardio with strength and working multiple muscle groups with different exercises and has had a different routine every session. I'll be ready for Key West in two weeks time and keep it going up to my wedding in December. If he'll have me, I'll be using him again after these sessions. Will post before and after pictures.

I hired Gail as a personal trainer in October of 2013. After losing a significant amount of weight in 2011, I had gained it all back by 2013. I needed some newfound motivation, new workout routines and programs to use at the gym. Over the past 4 months Gail has not disappointed. She has provided me new routines/exercises and has given me the proper motivation to be exercising regularly. Gail has a positive attitude and encourages you to reach your goals, while giving you the tools and programs to do so. I would highly recommend Gail as a personal trainer to anyone looking to improve their fitness, lose weight, or even just to get new ideas and programs to use at the gym.

My fiance and I have been working out with Robert for two months now and really enjoy our sessions with him. He is professional, punctual and a lot of fun to talk to while we are working out. I have a knee injury and he makes it a point to suggest alternative exercises that I can do. I would highly recommend Robert for personal training.

It's my first time trying personal training and I could not be happier! Robert is more than just a trainer; he is a coach pushing you each step of the way and motivates you to do your best. Personally for me, the goal was to lose weight and get in better shape, but definitely got way more than I expected. I am still in process of reaching my target (to lose 10 more pounds; already lost 10 pounds in first 2 month) but I already see results in my lifestyle and feel stronger, healthier AND happier. The training sessions are not easy, but Robert makes the whole process fun and I always look forward to challenging myself with something new. I highly recommend Robert to everyone who is ready to take the leap in their life and get on the path to be fit and live healthier.

Waverly is AMAZING!!! Within a few weeks I was already seeing results. She caters each workout to your needs and is extremely accommodating to your schedule. She's helped me modify my diet and would even give me workouts to do on my own on days that I couldn't meet with her. I've shopped around for a few personal trainers and the other trainers I met were great, but after meeting with Waverly and working out with her, I hired her on the spot. If you're serious about your goals and want to see results, she is THE ONE for you! She will make you WORK, but you will LOVE the outcome!

I hired Robert about two months ago. I have had personal trainers before but none like him. Robert is an asset- he knows how to deal with clients and trains them accordingly. He inculcates a sense of discipline into the client which is great. I have lost about 10 pounds and this is just the beginning. He keeps you motivated and makes you look at the larger picture- which means how one would feel at the end of the sessions when one has become healthier and looks good too. I would highly encourage people to get his team if you are serious about working out and improving yourself.

Elin's personal training was great! It really establishes a good routine that you'll remember for years to come. I mainly worked with Kris, who was very knowledgeable and patient. He showed me proper form and made sure to answer all of the questions I had. They are both great at getting back to you via text and email, so I never felt like I was on my own whenever I was unsure of something. Thank you both so much!

If you are looking for a personal trainer, stop and choose Elin! I’ve came across dozens of trainers around the NOVA area at different prices and nobody stood out like Elin. Believe me, most of other trainers give generic off-book material and workouts that you can just easily look up yourself and do it for free. But Elin’s team professionalism and knowledge on body health really enlightens you on how to be a healthier eater. I was appointed to Kris, one of Elin’s long serving members and he is amazing! Him and his team really care about your goals, with the upmost respect and knowledge, your workouts are tailored down to the bone of your specific goals you want to reach! They keep up to date on your daily diet take-ins and make sure you are hitting the gym as often as you may fit in your schedule! Kris makes the workouts fun, and always know how far you can push yourself! I’ve been motivated to hit the gym throughout the week constantly now outside of my training to maintain my fitness and I’ve seen results of my strength increasing every week! Remember it’s important to keep up good healthy eating and exercise in order to see the results you want to reach! Please give Elin a call, the most kind, realistic, professional, and caring trainer I’ve talked to. Don’t hesitate! Call him now!

Please note all concerns were addressed by Svetness and the comment below no longer represents my experience with Svetness. _______________________________________________________________ Disclaimer: I have never written a negative review of any product or service in my life. I tend not to do so unless my experience has been horrendous and I feel compelled to warn others out of fear that they will follow in my footsteps. That being said, BUYERS BEWARE -- avoid this place at all costs. There are better places to spend a couple grand. On all fronts, the Salesman, the trainers and the management/policies, this organization is HORRIBLE. First, for background, I am locked into a 6 month contract that I was coerced into by Jason, the personal training manager aka the "Salesman." Jason initially encouraged me to lock myself into a 12-month contract since it "produces the best results." There is no free training session or free trial period to test out their services. Signing a 12-month contract would be all well and good if the training services were guaranteed or no money back. Jason essentially coerces you to sign into a year-long lease and if you actually take the time to read, there is no remedy for breach of contract on Svetness' part or ability for the customer to terminate. Even more incredulous is that the Salesman encouraged me not to read the contract stating that "no one reads it," rushed me through it and made me feel like I was spending too much time. Buyers beware - READ THE CONTRACT. In fact, the Salesman should encourage you to BRING THE CONTRACT HOME, Review it and make sure you are comfortable with the terms. Do not be coerced. Second, the trainers. I am not sure what their hiring policy is, but it seems to be any random joe on the street that looks fit. NONE of the trainers I have worked have been professional. Even though I purchased the 6-month, 2 day a week package, since March, I have only worked out with a Svetness trainer once a week. They try to console you by saying you don't lose your sessions, but at this point, I do not want another session with someone from Svetness again! I am on my FIFTH trainer, and each trainer has either not had the time preference that I specified and asked for, been thoroughly unimpressive trainers in terms of technique/motivation, or horrible with communication. With my most recent trainer, I attempted to set up a schedule, to which he agreed. However, he did not inform me that he was going on vacation and when I tried to ask him why he didn't tell me so we could readjust, he did not respond until three days later to tell me I was not a good fit. My third assigned trainer was fired for lying about agreeing to a time to meet with me. Next, the management and oversight is HORRIBLE. There is NO management of these trainers. As I implied, they are not beholden to a certain schedule. They do not appear to answer to anyone. They can be fired on a whim. I imagine their official title is a "independent contractor," but if I was a business owner in the business of PEOPLE and helping PEOPLE, I would make sure all personnel under my purview were professional and adhering to their scheduled times and promises! Good luck getting in touch with "Svet" to voice your concerns. Instead you will be redirected to an "Office Manager" to deal with billing issues. Note the Office Manager that I was dealing with, Sunita, was also fired. I have never had such bad customer service in my life. One last thing, a co-worker that I suggested this organization to for its convenience (prior to having experienced the aforementioned horrible customer service) also signed up for training. And, HER trainer also flaked on her twice in a row. This leads me to believe that everyone in this organization is incompetent. Worst of all, I will have to continue to let them "work through their issues" or otherwise pay over $3000 for receiving absolutely nothing in return.
