Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

If you were thinking of enlisting a personal trainer, you could find a better one than Jeremy.

This was my first time using a personal trainer, and it was just what I needed to get my personal goals started. Every session was something new so it never felt boring or repetitive. Rafi was able to keep me motivated each week and always pushed my limits to show me what I could really accomplish.

Adnan is an outstanding coach and personal trainer. He is professional, knowledgable and goes above & beyond to help you reach your fitness goals. I learnt a lot from Adnan as he is always eager to explain the science and research behind every workout, movement, and technique. I was able to make visible strength gains and consistently improve my PRs. Not to mention, Adnan provides flexibility in scheduling and was always willing to work with my busy travel schedule. I highly recommend Adnan and Strength Lab Training.

I was looking for a personal trainer who could teach me how to do strength related exercise at my apartment gym. It was very important to me that I felt comfortable working with my trainer from home. Dan let me do my first workout at a local gym before I decided to hire him and then workout at home. I have been training with Dan for a month now and he is exactly what I was looking for in a personal trainer. He's always been very professional and really communicates with me during workouts. What I like about Dan is he takes the time to explain the logic behind each exercise and checks in with me constantly to ensure I understand. The other personal trainers I met did not really do this. I love learning and each workout session has felt valuable and encouraging. In addition to the workouts Dan has also helped me keep my food and nutrition in check each week. I had to use to doing a food log again but it is nice getting feedback on little things I can tweak. Overall, I really like how I can feel more confident in the gym doing something other than the treadmill. I was always afraid to do anything with weights (even my own body weight) because I thought I'd hurt myself. Now I go in the gym with a plan and basic understanding of the movements, correct posture, and etc. I'd definitely recommend Dan to any beginners out there. I'll be continuing my workouts with him.

After two years of being a stay-at-home parent and not utilizing my gym membership, I sought out personal training. At the time I needed some motivation as it was too easy to "throw in the towel" at the end of the day and relax on the couch. I was unhappy with my body and feeling lethargic daily. Just one month into working with Jeremy I noticed my energy increasing and my partner constantly told me how much happier I seemed. Jeremy, the owner and trainer at NJoy Fitness, is the perfect blend of trainer and life-coach. I've renewed with him several times already and have no plans to quite working with him. In the past, I have had several attempts at personal training and this is BY FAR the BEST and most rewarding experience I have ever had. I am so happy with Jeremy that I have been talking about my experience with everyone I know. Jeremy is patient and supportive as well as absolutely knowledgeable. He is flexible with scheduling- which is a great bonus for my busy family life. He pushes you hard and also recognizes your limitations. Good form and proper technique are more important to him than breaking your body getting in three more reps. I cannot say enough good things about his methodology and energy. If you are on the fence about who to choose as a trainer...trust me, you will be glad you did!

I really enjoy my personal training sessions at ianfitness! Cindy is awesome. I get a better workout in 30 minutes than I would on my own at a gym for 2 hours. I love how I just show up and have a whole workout planned for me :) and they're very efficient- I am working out at least areas of my body with each exercise!

There are personal trainers, and then there is Dave Engle. Dave stands alone because of his extensive experience and outstanding qualifications. Whether you are training for an Olympic event or are a 92-year-old woman – as I am – Dave’s help is invaluable. In my case, I was afraid I had reached the point where I was finally going to need a walker. But under Dave’s careful guidance I am now able to climb a flight of stairs without difficulty. I give Dave credit for improving my quality of life greatly. Don’t believe that you have to give in to the infirmities of old age. Let Dave help you!

I am a member of a national health club chain and initially talked to the in-house trainers. I was so turned off by the hard sell and puppy-mill approach that I decided to find a personal trainer that I could respect and trust. I have been working with Jeremy 2x a week for approx. 2 months. I started with a goal of getting “bathing suit-ready” for a trip of a lifetime. Beyond achieving my initial goal, I have become stronger, more flexible and I am seeing better-than-expected results. The journey to better health / fitness and our working relationship will continue long after my vacation is over. I am very happy with my choice in trainers [and his choice to take me on as a client]. Pros: • Great sense of humor and always positive, even when I am not! • Sensitive to my existing injuries • Easy to work with and flexible with reschedules • Answers my questions and explains the mechanics / expected outcomes of each workout • Focused on developing good form and nutritional habits • Extremely responsive to my questions between sessions [via email/ text] Cons: • None

I needed to lose the pounds I put on after I stopped breastfeeding my infant. Being a new mum, I couldn't really afford the overhead time to go to a gym several times a week. However, my experience with personal trainers has been that they design the workout based on their agenda rather than my needs and abilities. Still, I tried Tiffany, after finding Thumbtack, where I could specify that I wanted a trainer who would challenge me but not be overbearing ... and I can say, after more than 15 sessions, that this is definitely the case with Tiffany! Moreover, she was willing to meet my awful 7 am schedule; and re-schedule often (having a kid makes life unpredictable!) And, most important, I reached my fitness goal with our sessions. I cannot recommend her more highly.

Kendall has helped me move from being afraid to work out to looking forward to it! Kendall is a very skilled personal trainer. More than that, he is a genuine person who truly wants what is best for you. Kendall helped me overcome my fears about working again out after a long hiatus, gaining a lot of weight, and having a number of injuries. His ability and willingness to adapt planned exercises is top notch and helped me stay on the move for over a year now. I am successfully working out multiple times per week thanks to Kendall's patience, guidance, and encouragement. Kendall has even started working out with my 12-year old son helping him overcome muscle imbalances and learning proper exercise techniques without over-stressing his still growing body. A man of many talents, he is fun, kind, and committed to helping others achieve their personal health goals. So glad I found Tier 1!!!
