Working with Ellen was wonderful. Her professionalism, courtesy and thoughtfulness were outstanding. Her food was both delicious and presented beautifully. I am so happy I went with her and will gladly call her again. So low key and genuinely a very nice person. She helped with so many things that were above and beyond her job. I highly recommend Ellen to cater your party. Mine was a small graduation party of 35 people at a community room in a NYC apartment building. It has difficult parking and drop off for all her catering materials. But Ellen made it work. She also helped me plan a very tasteful menu. Also her assistant, Alex, was so professional and diligent. They both really helped make my party a success!

We were very pleased with the evening. From the variety of the hors d’oeuvres to the “pasta show” to the service and quality of all the food, we couldn’t have been more pleased. We thought the number of helpers was very appropriate and we were extremely impressed with the bartender's ability to bartend, serve hors d’oeuvres, take responsibility for the table – and all graciously and with a smile. What a difference that makes at a party! NY Catering was a pleasure to deal with!

This team provided a custom made traditional west African meal for my father's surprise 70th birthday party. Everyone raved about the food and the excellent service. People continued to ask about where I found them well into the next day. Sensing my nervousness, the entire team made it a seamless process for me upon arrival. I was provided with full catering as well as bartending service. They are definitely a group I'll use again for my upcoming 35th birthday party this summer. I cannot thank them enough for a wonderful event!

Initially contacted Rich to do the bartending at my 50th birthday party. After discussing my catering plans with Rich, he proposed that he stays in the kitchen and coordinates the food while he brings in additional people to help with the bar and serving the food. I am very happy with Rich in the way he managed the kitchen and the servers. In summary I would say Rich personally did an excellent job and would have no hesitation in recommending him. Rich and his crew cleaned up everything after the party. We only had a minimum amount to do the next day.

AMORACO CATERING DID AN EXCEPTIONAL JOB FOR MY PARTY! I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF HAVING THIS COMPANY CATER TO THE GUESTS OF ABOUT 40-45 @MY HUSBAND'S BIRTHDAY PARTY. AMORACO,WHOSE EXECUTIVE CHEF IS TAMARA SHENKLE PRESENTED THE OCCASION WITH PROFESSIONALISM, COURTESY, AND, ABOVE ALL-- MOUTH-CATERING CUISINE! AMORACO TOOK CARE OF EVERYTHING: TASTEFUL DECO' (MATCH FOR THE OCCASION), TABLE LININGS, CHINA, CUTLERY ETC.BIRTHDAY CAKE WAS WELL PREPARED AND DECORATED! THE FOOD WAS VERY FRESH, DELECTABLE AND DELICATE. THE MINI LOBSTER ROLLS, CRAB CAKES, MUSHROOM WONTONS WITH BLACK TRUFFLES ARE STILL A HUGE BUZZ AMONG SOME OF MY GUESTS. FRESH HOMEMADE GOURMET DOES REALLY MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN A WELL PREPARED CUISINE. WITH AN EXECUTIVE CHEF LIKE TAMARA, I WILL STRONGLY RECOMMEND AMORACO CATERING. MY HUSBAND WAS VERY HAPPY AND CONTENT.

We worked with Katherine Fonsella from DeCicco events and cuisine and she was WONDERFUL. We were planning a pre-wedding dinner for about 100 people in the Tarrytown area, but we live in Northern California. We did not know any venues or caterers or suppliers. Katherine helped us find a great, unusual loft venue, arranged all the decor, tables, lighting, and set up the catering from DeCiccos. The staff were excellent, the food was very good, everything went off perfectly. We are so appreciative of all that Katherine did to make our event wonderful!

Whether you are having a small get together for a few or a large gathering, be rest assured that your event will be amazing! Chef Michel is extremely professional, respectful, and friendly! He catered 2 events for our family and we were very pleased with both. The first was a party of nearly 100 people celebrating our son’s college graduation and daughter’s high school graduation. Our second event was a last minute post Thanksgiving weekend family get together for 12-15 people. Everything from the planning, to taste testing, and delivery was on point. Aside from the food being beyond mouth watering delicious, he coordinated with outside vendors to provide everything we needed to make the graduation event beautiful. He also provided on site chefs and wait staff, all of which were professional and attentive to details. They were flexible in their assigned roles and remained past the scheduled time to attend to our guests and clean up. Our home was left as clean as it was when they arrived! Chef Michel prides himself on delivering the best quality and freshest foods possible. Other than a few items that required pre-prep (like marinating / slow cooking...definitely try the roast pork and roast chicken) everything was prepared (cut, fried, cooked, assembled etc) on site. This truly makes a difference when you’re serving items like empanadas or tostones with avocado and shrimp (both highly recommended). Chef Michel is very creative. Whether you choose something from his printed menus, have other items in mind, or even have a special recipe that you want him to prepare...HE CAN DO IT! An important point to make about his catering style is that he is so proud of his creations that he wants everyone to be able to taste everything that he prepares. If you choose an appetizer and you have 100 people, you are not going to get 1 or 2 pieces per person or be charged by the piece, like most caterers. He will make sure you have more than enough for everyone. The same applies to your main course. We had leftovers for ourselves, even after our guests took food home. With all of this said, I truly feel that his prices are fair and reasonable! I could write more and would be more than happy to speak to anyone who has any questions, but I’ll end with...make sure you try his homemade ice creams (our favorites were coconut and pineapple), flan, and especially the sangria!

A successful summer in Southampton is a tall order and finding a great chef isn't easy. I was introduced to Chef Aless in 2016 and it was a blessing. She helped make this one of the best years to date. Her menus are consistently delicious and elegant. We have had the pleasure of her being in charge of the kitchen for 20 and 300 guests and she maintains the same cheerful disposition even when curveballs are thrown at her. I highly recommend her for all your catering needs. Lori N House Manager,Southampton NY

Peter and his team were absolutely amazing. Not only was he great at communicating with me prior to the event, but he also offered many delicious options for the menu to ensure there would be something for everyone at my party. The team was on time and very respectful of the staff and the space, putting together a lovely set-up with flowers (!) that made the event feel that much more special. The food and drinks were delicious. My personal favorite were the pulled pork sliders and mojitos, but everyone raved about how delicious all of our appetizers were. Peter even sent a special plate over to me (the host) to ensure I'd have a chance both to eat and sample his delicious menu. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of him and his staff throughout the night. They were just so thoughtful and professional. I would (and will!) absolutely hire Peter and Creative Table Catering again in the future. My friends were also very impressed by him and the value of the services he offered at my event. In a city with innumerable options for caterers, I would highly recommend Peter for any event you have. He made my special night a celebration to remember.

I hardly ever provide reviews but after our experience on Sunday, I felt compelled to provide feedback for the 'White Wolf' and his catering services. We contracted Gordon for a 4th of July weekend clam bake in our private home for 15 guests and it quickly became the centerpiece of the weekend. With regard to preparation and professionalism, Gordon scouted the location on the previous day, arrived early, and even used local seawater and kelp from the backyard to cook the lobsters! Their friendly and attentive service continued through the day. Although we were contracted from noon to 4p, the entire day went from 11a to 7:30p. We never felt rushed and his warm attitude and informative presentation allowed us to enjoy the day and feel tucked in. The very best part, aside from feeling as though we made friends during the day, was the food!! Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. Local produce and lobsters from main may have been the highlight, but they certainly weren't everything! Gordon cooked the best meal many of us have had in a while - and this is from a tough to impressive group of New Yorkers! While he took off, everyone raved about the day and our experience. Our guests requested his business card and hope he's not booked for our nex celebration. Never hesitate to use Gordon for any meal or to celebrate a special occasion - they exceeded expectations and provided a day we'll remember for a long time!

I can't even begin to express how much Platter Matters Catering was the logistical backbone of our corporate event. They are definitely NOT just another vendor but a partner and consultant to plan and execute your perfect event. They were willing to make special substitutions to fit our preferences and even shared some fun creative ideas for us. The food was simply delicious; it tasted as if made with love and pride. Our guests appreciated the attention to any serious food allergies. All staff was amazing, and Ivett (owner) was a fantastic resource and helped immensely with the planning process, logistics, and answered my questions at all hours of the day. I highly recommend them for any event! Deborah

Claude and Craig were fantastic, catering events on 3 consecutive days for me a week ago, with less than 2 weeks to do it. They were very kind, and are talented, producing a spread each day that everyone enjoyed a lot, and were punctual, swift in setting up and breaking down, which they did discretely as the party continued on around them. The well-abled duo was able to handle a somewhat complex arrangement in a short window (and popular time) with excellent communication, and offered competitive rates, especially for the use of better ingredients (organic & non-GMO). I would and have already recommended them to friends. Unique dishes, down-home style cooking, with flairs of other cultures mixed in - thoroughly enjoyable. The veggie eggplant lasagna was a big hit, among others.

JP catered a party for us of about 40 adults and 20 kids and we had a great experience working with him - highly recommend his services! He was responsive and flexible during the planning phase, able to modify his gameplan day-of when our rooftop venue got rained out :( and prepped and served the food efficiently, beautifully and notably, without needing anything from us as hosts, letting us truly enjoy the party. On top of all that, all the guests loved the food itself and several have inquired about contacting JP for their own events. I’m happy to make those connections because JP is truly a great chef and a consummate professional!

It was an amazing experience having Milt, Janet and their crew as our caterers. They arrived early to set up and be prepared for our guest. The food was AMAZING!!!! I cannot get over their stuffed mushrooms, those delicious little chicken quesadilla, OMG the shrimp cocktail...I can sit here and name every single dish we ordered and tell the world what an amazing experience it was for my taste buds and my guest will say the same. I will continue to work with Studio Event Staffing for all my future events. Not only were they professional, they were very friendly and warm--they have an awesome team put together!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
