Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I choose the best flooring company or contractor in D.C.?

To find the best Washington, D.C., flooring companies and contractors, start by comparing a few online. This gives you access to side-by-side reviews and ratings. And oftentimes, customers will include photos of their flooring in their reviews. If you don’t see photos in the reviews, ask the companies for photos of their past work in order to gauge their quality of workmanship for yourself.

As you begin talking to potential pros, figure out which ones have experience installing the type of flooring you want in your home. In D.C., you might consider installing floors that can withstand D.C.’s hot summers and cold winters.

When you start getting quotes and estimates from companies, compare them against each other to help ensure you get the best price. Ultimately, you'll want to choose a flooring installation pro that offers a fair price, has a lot of experience and is available to complete the project in a reasonable timeframe.

What's the best type of flooring for D.C. homes?

Washington, D.C., has become more humid over the years. For this reason, engineered hardwood can be a better choice than solid wood, as it is more resistant to buckling, warping and bubbling when faced with high levels of humidity. But genuine hardwood can still be a good choice -- as long as it’s well-maintained and your home is climate-controlled.

The best outdoor patio flooring types include porcelain tile, vinyl, brick, stone, pavers and composite — anything that can withstand water, heat and freeze-and-thaw cycles.

Will installing a new floor make my D.C. home more valuable?

In Washington, D.C., putting in new flooring and performing other home remodeling projects could increase your home’s value -- especially if you can recoup those costs and if the upgrade has a high resale value.  The Remodeling 2020 Cost vs. Value Report found that a major, mid-range kitchen remodel can recoup 58.6% of the cost and has a resale value of $40,127. In this remodeling project, new resilient flooring, laminate countertops and other features were either updated or added to the kitchen.

Contact a top flooring company in D.C. to get advice on what type of flooring you should install in your home.

What type of flooring can you put over ceramic tile?

You can put carpet, laminate or engineered hardwood flooring over ceramic tile. Vinyl flooring can go over tile as long as the surface of the ceramic is even and smooth, without any crevices or bumps.

If this is your first time installing flooring over existing ceramic tile, consider hiring a tiling professional to do the work instead and avoid damages.

What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor and a concrete floor?

The time it takes to install hardwood and concrete floors varies based on the condition of your current floors, the size of your floors and other factors. Use the following information to gauge how long your flooring installation might take.

Time it takes to install a hardwood floor: Several days to 2+ weeks

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation.

During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Subfloor repair can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins.

The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, staining takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied.

Time it takes to install a concrete floor: 2 days to 1 week

Installing concrete floors can take anywhere from two days to a week, depending on what you need done. Some of the factors that can impact how long it will take to install concrete floors are:

  • The size of the space
  • The stain or finish
  • The condition of your existing floor
  • Whether you want intricate, simple or no designs
  • The overall complexity of the project

To get an accurate estimate of how long installing concrete floors will take for your home, speak to a concrete contractor near you.

What is the best hardwood floor?

The best hardwood floors are made from durable, hard species like oak, maple and cherry. Solid hardwood is typically the better choice over engineered wood because you can sand out the scratches multiple times. However, engineered hardwood is better equipped for humid households.

Consider buying prefinished hardwood flooring, which can be more durable and simplify the installation process. Plus, prefinished wood often comes with a warranty from the factory.

Bamboo is another popular option, though be aware that some might not be as eco-friendly as others due to its production process. Some of the popular hardwood floor brands are Bruce, Carlisle and Lumber Liquidators.

To ensure you choose the best type of wood flooring for your home, hire one of the top hardwood floor installation professionals near you.

Do engineered wood floors scratch easily?

Yes, but engineered wood flooring has the same susceptibility to scratching as hardwood flooring. Engineering wood floors have a layer of real wood on top. For this reason, engineered hardwood reacts the same way that regular hardwood does to scratching. If you don’t mind a few character marks on your floor like small scratches and dents, this is not a problem. However, engineered wood can be sanded down and resealed if the damage gets too great.

Find a hardwood floor professional in your area who can tell you more about the pros and cons of engineered wood floors.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

Here are some examples of floor installation costs, depending on the material:

I hired Traylor design to redo my hardwood floors in my condo. They had to remove the old floors from a concrete subfloor and glue down the new floors. Six months later, the floors still look great. Very good value, however some patience required.

The team at absolute interiors was great from start to finish. Very responsive. I received a quote immediately and was quickly scheduled to get my hardwood floors on the first level replaced with new hardwood floors. When the team arrived, they made mention of the fact that my floor was very unleveled and had a significant dip in the middle. I thought I could not afford to level the floor and it would need to stay that way (i have an old house), but the team at absolute interiors said they could level out the floor for a very reasonable price. They returned the next day, and as promised, leveled out the floor and installed beautiful new hardwood floors. I will certainly use them for other home projects and have already recommended them to friends.

Couldn't be happier with the floor installation performed yesterday. Very professional and quick. Couldn't believe they installed the floating planked floor along with molding in one day. Highly recommend.

I can highly recommend Forma Floors, and I only have positive things to say about them. Bruno is a great communicator and they installed hardwood floors in almost our whole house. The work was done very quickly and with quality. It only took 2 days and the guy was very attentive to details. This included baseboards too. Bruno was very accommodative and flexible, for example we had delays in the delivery of the second batch of our floors and he was patient and flexible to send his guys when whenever we needed it. When we had this delay with the other Floor Company through which we bought the floors, Bruno even tried to find the exact floors we were looking for through his own suppliers. I cannot be happier with an installation service and highly recommend it, we would hire them again if we need to install more floors!

-flooring cupping immediately after installation -days later some boards began to separate -floors were left covered in glue, which proceeded to take me more than 6 hours scrubbing on my hands and knees to remove -found cigarette butts in the room, but denied smoking -have to hire someone else to fix floors

Josias and his crew had a extremely big project with our home. We had horrible bamboo floors installed in our home in Cap Hill D.C. and needed Josias and his crew to remove everything and install new floors....a project I thought would have taken forever. They came in, worked very hard and did an incredible job. I wish I could show a photo of the new floors we had put in by Crafted Hardwood Floors. It was not an easy project, but these guys were there some days from 7:30am to 6:30pm. They were very polite and made sure our home was not destroyed during the project. I would definitely recommend Josias and Crafted Hardwood Floors for any flooring work because like I said, our job was strenuous and tough and they completed the job in 1 week. Thanks again for making our home look incredible!

Working with Peter and his team was a great experience. He initially provided us a quote and opening acknowledged that these would be some adjustment once they opened up the floor. Lost of additional work needed to stabilize the floor. The additional work was very reasonable which could have been extremely expensive. This work added an additional day to the quoted time. I would highly recommend Peter and his team to complete any hardwood flooring project.

Edwin and his staff did a an exceptional job with installing luxury laminate flooring in my basement and carpet on my stairs. He is extremely knowledgeable and walked me through the process. He also presented options to me in case we ran into issues. If anyone in the DMV needs floors installed, Edwin is your guy. I will definitely refer him to anyone!

I enjoyed working with Randy and his crew at FloorTechs. Not only is he familiar with all flooring products, but he was responsive to my initial request for a quote and provided a fair estimate as well as list of materials within a day of reviewing the scope of work. I purchased the flooring so I only needed Randy to do the install after I allowed the floors to acclimate. There was only one hiccup in the process in that I didn't purchase t-molding and needed extra threshold, which added an extra trip for me on the day of installation, but overall the process was seamless and I would recommend hiring FloorTechs.

Above and beyond!! I have been going through a 1 year plus renovation and it has been a disaster. Fenix Flooring has been the one shining moment of the year! Edwin and his team not only did an outstanding job on our new laminate floor he also spent time helping me with another issue which he had nothing to gain from financially! I would hire Fenix again.. and again...... and again!

I had a great experience with Peter's Flooring. He came by twice before the work started to take a look at my place and show me flooring options for my unit. The guys who came to do the work did a great, detailed job, (with some tough tile removal) and made sure to do a walk through with me at the end for finishing touches. I highly recommend working with Peter, and will be calling him again soon for future work!

Fantastic work by Randy and his team; they installed bamboo flooring in our town house, and we were very impressed with their responsiveness, reliability, professionalism, expertise, and ultimately the quality of their work! They patiently dealt with all the hurdles and bottlenecks that came up during the installation, were detail oriented, and worked extra hard to make sure that everything looked perfect. As an added bonus, they left the house clean and in perfect condition when they left. Their price is very reasonable too, both in general and given the quality of their work. I would not hesitate to hire FloorTechs again or recommend them to anyone looking to install hardwood, bamboo or other flooring. Thank you FloorTechs!

Edwin and his crew replaced the old carpet in our row house basement with new vinyl floors, and we were amazed at how quickly they worked. The entire job took less than a day. I also appreciate how Edwin took the time to walk me through our options when choosing materials. He was also very easy to work with when it came to ordering the materials and scheduling. Just a great experience all the way around. Highly recommended.

The floor installation itself is fine. They finished on time and its priced reasonably. However, cleanup was a mess and there was glue everywhere. They also installed trim wrong and we had to fix it. It feels like there were probably 5 hours of work of actual clean up, including installing shoe molding and door stopper ourselves. We wish they would have done that. I would also suggest they cover areas with plastic wraps next time so glue wont be everywhere.

At last: I have finally found an honest, professional, and fair priced contractor. Ronaldo replaced the floors in my living room, bathroom, kitchen, dining area. Crown moulding on my kitchen cabinet and removed a cabinet to create an open concept look. After my last contractor ripped me off and damaged my property, I wasn’t sure who to trust. I will definitely be using Ronaldo for all my future work! He always answers the phone and best of all he is a person of his word. This was my best experience on Thumbtack yet. Stay tuned for more updates!

Grandez Construction did a great job with our basement after it got flooded. They responded very fast to our post and Karen was very good at communicating with us. They came the next day to check and gave us a free estimated. The work was done very fast and they installed new floors (Vinyl, water-proof) and they also installed a new kitchen for us and a new door! All this was done within 4 days. The professionals did a great job with everything and they even picked up some items from Home Depot/Lowe's. They give good and reasonable estimates and they follow through on their word. Thank you again for working with us and now the basement looks great! Olivier
