Working with Ellen was wonderful. Her professionalism, courtesy and thoughtfulness were outstanding. Her food was both delicious and presented beautifully. I am so happy I went with her and will gladly call her again. So low key and genuinely a very nice person. She helped with so many things that were above and beyond her job. I highly recommend Ellen to cater your party. Mine was a small graduation party of 35 people at a community room in a NYC apartment building. It has difficult parking and drop off for all her catering materials. But Ellen made it work. She also helped me plan a very tasteful menu. Also her assistant, Alex, was so professional and diligent. They both really helped make my party a success!

Every Detail Catering truly lives up to their name. Chuck Cohen made sure every detail was just perfect for the grand opening of our store. The fruit and veggie platters were so fresh and everyone loved the roasted veggie sandwiches and sausage and pepperoni strombolis. Thanks Chuck and Maria for helping to make our event a huge success! We will definitely use Every Detail Catering for all of our events! Stephanie & Brian of Big Frog Custom T-Shirts

Chris and his team were the perfect choice for our event. From our first conversation through execution, the process was seamless and efficient. Chris was always quick to respond and tailored a menu of hors d'oeuvres and drinks that were perfect for the occasion and within our budget. I would absolutely recommend him to others and plan to use NY Catering Service again for our holiday party.

Lauren Collura catered a party for 60 people in my apartment in New York City. The event was composed of a service of hors d'oeuvres, beverage service, and a buffet dinner. Lauren is an accomplished professional who understands the multiple components that must be part of a successful catering business. Lauren worked with me to develop the plans for the party, was quickly and effectively responsive to my suggestions and concerns, and executed the plan regarding the food and service in an excellent fashion. She visited my home well before the event to assess the space and determine the set-up in my home; she arranged for the rental of all food service items, tables and chairs; and she constructed an arrangement that worked seamlessly in my home. It was a pleasure for me to work with her and, most important, the guests had a wonderful time, all around, as evidenced by the very many compliments regarding Lauren's work that I received.

Tamara Shenkle was fantastic to work with. From start to finish, Tamara professionally brought me through the process of planning our marriage celebration NYC cocktail party. From the delicious menu (the guests raved perfectly bite sized hors d'ourves), cocktails & bar (she handled everything) to the handling of a lovely prosecco toast for fifty of our closest friends. Amoraco's food was fresh, exquisite, the glass and serving ware completely taken care of and the staff gracious, skilled and friendly. Thank you Tamara for catering our party. We and, again, the guests gave you and your team heartfelt compliments. P.S. Thank you for leaving the place so clean - our host appreciated it! I highly recommend Tamara and Amoraco for anyone reading this post.

Woking with Adolfo was a total pleasure, he was very responsible and responsive whenever we contacted him. He came a week before to check the location which helped a lot to have a smooth and a pleasant event. The presentation and the taste of the appetizers was excellent and the main course was great as well. Manjar's captain was an excellent leader he was on top of what needed to be done during the party and always with a smile which made it easy to work with and ask him questions. I will recommend Manjar's services to anyone who is looking for a catering company.

Best experience ever. We needed a bartender for a private birthday party I was organizing for my boss and took a chance on hiring HighLife. Not only did we get a bartender but we got Tyler himself - the owner of HighLife. He was amazing. Our chef we hired from a different company was a disaster and Tyler took it upon himself to help serve the meals, set the tables with wine glasses, pour water/wine throughout dinner, not to mention making the best margaritas on the planet. Extremely reasonable prices with top notch service that is so hard to find these days. Next party I organize I will simply call Tyler. Whether I need a bartender, chef, catering, etc - HighLife will be my only phone call. Thanks for everything!

f despite that it was thanksiving day, and she had her own family, Chef Aless catered my family's special day with superb attention to both the food, which was beyond delicious and plentiful, and presentation. She arrived early with a trolley full of delectable hors d'oeuvres, the best turkey ever baked, and containers full of great accompanying veggies. This was the first time I have ever needed outside catering, but the experience of having Chef Aless was so seamless, and the food was so perfect, that even if I have to invent an occasion, which I will, I know she could handle it with a touch of that marvelous French charm and expertise, and very little interference from me! I'm a cook, specifically a baker. but Chef Aless is a master, and everything was delivered expeditiously and promptly. And with heart... A truly wonderful experience. Thank you so much Alessandra. We cannot say enough good things about SGS catering, especially Chef Grant. We had about 80 guests and a limited budget. But he was very accommodating in working with us. Great communications all the way till the day of our event. We also had some guests bring in food as a partial potluck. The chefs were really helpful and quick in organizing everything. We also had a vegetarian guest who inquired about vegetarian options before dinner was served. When dinner was ready an hour later, the server found her in the crowd and served her a vegetarian plate (we had a buffet style). I also made a two tiered cake myself for the event as I like to bake. As I was getting ready to assemble a tiered cake for the first time, Chef Grant pulled out his great decoration skills and made my cake look beautiful! We cannot say enough thank you for all the great help! Last but not the least, the food was amazing! The guests were all talking about how much they liked it. We are very happy there was leftovers so we can keep enjoying the food for days. We would definitely go back to them again if we ever need catering for any other events. Thank you again SGS Catering for everything!

Chef Greg and his team did an excellent job setting up and catering yummy foods at my wedding. Greg is very passionate in cooking... you will know it after you try his food. All my guests are still raving about the foods served that day especially the fish, braised beef polenta, and oxtail. The foods were not only delicious but also, illustrated remarkable artistic culinary skills. Stephanie was great in handling all the logistic parts, love the decor and end-result of the wedding venue. It was simply beautiful and elegant. Thank you for making my wedding day extra special!

Carol and her team are awesome! My fiancé and I were faced with needing to serve over 700 people in a space which could only seat 400 people comfortably. Carol provided us with an awesome food tasting and met with us at our location to help us map out all the possibilities. After my fiancé and I realized that we could be expecting about 900 guests and that our original plan would not be feasible, we ended up having to rent a hall where everything was included. Although we did not get to complete our business with Carol and her team, they showed great professionalism, kindness, patience and thought outside the box in helping us figure things out. And the food tasting was great! We would definitely consider T & C Catering for other events, and recommend them to others.

The delivery was prompt and efficient. The food received rave reviews from the guests. The only two things that kept from the 5th star was that the pasta was a tad over cooked and I wish coffee were a part of the package. I highly recommend this catering company to anyone. I already have people asking me who catered the party!

Five stars doesn't do them justice! Our experience with Ms. Reid-Worthington and everyone at 'Now That Was A Great Party' was outstanding. Ms. Reid-Worthington was a consummate professional from the very first email to the very last moments of our event. Their food was absolutely devoured and received rave reviews from our guests! Ms. Reid-Worthington made such an effort to create a menu that reflected our vision for the day- even taking on special requests. She was open, patient, kind and offered great and helpful suggestions. While this time around we only hired 'Now That Was A Great Party' for catering- I know that they do full event planning, and based on my experiences, I would be extremely confident having them plan my event from start to finish. We had a great feeling right from the start about 'Now That Was A Great Party', and about business owner, Ms. Reid-Worthington, and our instincts were spot on. We're looking forward to working with 'Now That Was A Great Party' for many years to come!

And you get a lot of food for your money. He made cocktail shrimp as one of the appetizers and the shrimp used was the jumbo size shrimp. Who does that this days..just chef Rob. Chef Rob was very attentive to the special needs that I had to the flavor and taste of the menu item's that I choose. Outstanding. .will use this service again

JP and his team were fantastic and we look forward to working with him again. He catered an event for 120 guests the night before our wedding so it was pretty important to us that it went right! The food was delicious, we still have friends telling us how much they loved it. He really goes above and beyond to ensure a good experience and provided us with many more dishes than we had anticipated. I would absolutely recommend him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
