What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Maik and Amaker are at the top of the game in personal training- they train using the latest evidence in exercise and nutrition and are highly motivational. Every single workout has been customized, so I've seen results much quicker than I have with other trainers or gym classes (e.g., cross fit, boot camp). Dewayne has been a great trainer for my husband and me! We hired Dewayne when we were preparing for our wedding and decided to continue training with him after because of the great routine that we were in. Each workout is different and difficult in its own way and we always feel like we are getting pushed to work harder. Another perk is that Dewayne meets us at the gym in our apartment building, which is super convenient. Nico is an amazing trainer! Every time he comes to my gym, he teaches many kinds of exercises, some times using tools or other times with machines. It never makes me bored, and it must be great to use different muscles. It's been about two months since I started training with him, and now I feel having more power, and my abs, arms and legs have been getting toned. It's so fun having trained by him because he's so nice and always cheer me up after my hard work, or right after getting up. I totally recommend Nico as a personal trainer.

Maik is a fantastic athlete and a coach. He knows the science as well as the practice. He explains every movement, teaches how it impacts your muscles and shows you how to train right. Even in one session i learned so many things that i have been doing wrong. Andres is an incredible personal fitness trainer who understands the needs of his clients. Throughout my life I've exercised either in the gym or by playing sports (basketball, soccer and tennis) but have not been able to target certain muscle groups that Andres has taught me how to exercise. He's a great motivator and trainer. Andres is also a very personable guy. Karl is great, I have now worked with him for 3 weeks and I have been really enjoying our sessions. He is incredibly professional, thoroughly assesses your needs and prepares as well as modifies your workout accordingly. He is an experienced trainer and uses a wide array of training modules to include TRX, kettle bells, weights, High Intensity Interval Training, Kick boxing and Pilates among others. Karl has certainly given me the motivation to train harder and even within the first three weeks I can see significant difference in strength and endurance as well as body shape. I have been going to the gym for years but have never had such a shift particularly in such a short period of time. Above all Karl is very pleasant to work with and takes your fitness and health very seriously.

One word: Transformative. If I were asked to name one person who "brought the groove back" to training, it would be Kadian (a.k.a. Niko) 1. Professional 2. Knows what he's doing and talking about. He is a science guy buy doesn't make you listen to a whole science lecture while you're trying to get the position right and count your reps (unlike some trainers.) 3. Listens to your individual needs, and will adjust accordingly 4. Approachable, motivational, and most importantly, makes you look forward to your next session! I've always dreaded working with trainers, but love going to the gym generally (machines used to be heaven!). But I needed to stir things up and my routine was getting too boring, and thankfully, I was sent this angel to guide me. Location is great for me and I look forward to our next session.

Ashley was very responsive and communicative via text setting up our personal training session. Once we met at the gym she was super thorough in covering what my experience was, which goals I wanted to set, how best to motivate me to reach them. During the sessions, she pushes me to go hard and keeps pushing when I want to give up. Great personality, very funny and fun to be around, and knows how to mix up the exercises so you never get bored. By the end I always feel great! Definitely sore, but not to the point where I can't move at all the next day. Definitely a fantastic trainer and I highly recommend her!

I have worked with Alex for a few sessions now. He is very knowledgeable and always knows how to push me to my limits without hurting myself. I feel very accomplished after each session. I found Maik through Thumbtack, never having worked with a trainer before. I am not a gym person, and never have been. But I decided to make a change this year, and he has really helped. I choose him because he seemed to really know his stuff, and he does. He is friendly, with no attitude, and really wants you to succeed. He is also very thorough. He is always checking up on how you are doing, and providing homework to do on the weekends. He also provided me with a diet that I found easy to follow and one that has also given me more energy, and stamina. If you are looking for a qualified, friendly and very thorough trainer, I can't recommend him enough.

OUTSTANDING PERSONAL TRAINER!! I've worked with other trainers in the past and there is no comparison - he is by far the best. I work out with Joel in my building's gym and he is very creative and resourceful with the equipment at hand. The exercises he gives me are efficient and well thought out in that they work out several parts of the body at once. Joel is incredibly knowledgeable about exercise science, nutrition and the body. Not to mention, he is a pleasure to work out with: fun, motivating, interesting, professional and super smart! The sessions go by quickly. One day a week we have a boxing based session - great fun and an excellent workout! I've noticed many positive changes in my body after a very short time. I can't recommend Joel enough.
