I found out about chef Chris through a catering service. I wasn't sure what to expect because I rarely entertain at home. I wanted something special for my friends because we were celebrating my promotion but I didn't want to do anything ordinary. Chris and his team were great, we asked for some specialty wine, cocktails, and food. He went above and beyond! He even brought a personal sommelier and mixologist! Incredible! Really cannot say enough good things about his food and beverage team! I highly recommend the perfect bite. Creamy cheese, bright apple and crunchy bacon? Awesome sauce! Highly recommend for any and all occasions. Don't forget to inquire about his gnocchi, he made them right in front of us! Really cool, can't wait to have him in my home again! 5 stars!

Bacco Catering was a great choice for our event. We used them for a charity event at our store and they performed incredibly. Our guest were so pleased as many of them asked me " who are the caterers, this food and service is amazing". Thank you Lauren so much for such a great night.

Tamara was amazing, full stop. She essentially captained a 10-person bar-tending team as well as her expert crew for a 3-hour event that included 300+ people, 2 floors of a venue, and 3 standing bars – and she did it all while delivering a tasty, fresh array of dishes that at least one dozen guests named "amazing." (Personal favorites included the juicy apricot chicken and zesty cous cous, but it was all first-class.) Tamara is a natural event wizard. She's generous with her time and talent and, frankly, amazing to behold on site. She was prompt and professional about communicating her team's needs and even came prepared with additional supplies, showing that she anticipated needs we had not even realized we'd have. (We ultimately needed to rely on all of her resources, and she passed this pressure test with flying colors.) Thumbtack's prompt asks if Tamara went "above and beyond" – we'd say a resounding yes, such that the event would not have been half the success it was without her. She stepped into an informal leadership role over a key component of the evening (the bar and bussing management) when this was far from her stated duties. She was a courteous, engaging, and sharp-eyed director of not only the dinner service, but also the entire room. Tamara has spoiled us for any other catering service, and we can only hope she'll work with us again in the future.

We had a party in our home for 30 colleagues. Chef Dan arrived exactly on time and brought everything he needed with him. He prepared an array of visually appealing and delectable tasting culinary creations that wowed our guests taste buds and satiated their appetites. The bartender was great and the servers did an impeccable job of constantly bringing Dan's gourmet offerings while being pleasant and unobtrusive. Many caterers provide quantity and some high quality- chef Dan did both at a reasonable price and with a smile on his face. He cooked everything fresh in our kitchen and when he and his staff finished, our kitchen looked as pristine as when he arrived. The party was great fun and a big success. Every one of our guests commented on how fabulous the food was and how outstanding the service. He is our go to guy for any future parties or affairs. kudos and thanks. Mel & Pamela Pratter

We had a party for my wife's birthday at the house for 40 people and could not have been more pleased with Adolfo Silverio and Manjar Catering. Both the food and the service were first class. Adolfo worked with us on the menu and layout for the party and everything went off without a hitch. People were raving about the food from the duck crepes to the quesadillas and the service including set-up, passing service, and clean-up were executed flawlessly. T.G. - Stamford

It was splendid. Chef Stenneth made the party. Everyone was raving about the food, the professionalism, the decor, and of course, the bartender -- all of which Private Chef Services provided. His team was tight and deft in their service. He gave me a taste testing a week before the party right at my apartment and scoped out the location beforehand so that he knew what to bring and expect. He brought backup materials and contingency cooking paraphernalia in the case of an unforeseen event. I was celebrator and the hapless party organizer, yet Chef made it the pieces move effortlessly when I could not. He is more than just a private dining service. He is more than a turn-key food provider. Chef Stenneth is the missing piece to your next event.

On short notice Erika and I put together a most wonderful evening for my wife on valentines day. Erika was willing to cook us dinner on her way home from another engagement. She was wonderful to work with when setting up our menu. She was able to shop for the necessary ingredients and work around my schedule. Upon arriving home, Erika had delicious appetizers waiting for us. The entrees and side dishes were amazing and cooked to perfection. Dessert was also fantastic. Erika's demeanor was pleasant and professional when engaged in conversation and her presence was virtually undetectable at other times. A lovely evening with great food and service. Thank you Erika.

Joe and his team were fantastic. We could not have had the wedding we did within our budget without the dedicated work of Joe and his team. We had over 200 people and Joe had a staff of 8 (which felt like 12) to prepare food for service, serve appetizers, bus tables and serve dinner. They were incredible. The food was excellent and Joe did a tremendous job in an incredibly challenging situation. We did not have a kitchen in our venue, so Joe was forced to make due by cooking ahead of time, transporting foods in temperature controlled containers and reheating onsite. The food quality did not suffer one iota, and Joe worked with us for months in advance of the wedding to design a menu which would respond to the challenges of the venue. People still mention how good the filet was 8 months later. Beyond the quality of the food, Joe is a full service caterer. For a nominal fee (far below any rental quote), Joe provided dinner plates, salad plates and cutlery for all of our guests. Joe also provided chafing dishes and serving instruments which were not available at our venue and which would have been exorbitant had we been forced to rent them from a third party vendor. Having the same person responsible for all of the food related rental items and the catering saved us time and money. Finally, Joe will work with you to make a menu for almost any budget. He understood our cost constraints and worked with us in creative and helpful ways to achieve a delicious menu we were proud to serve while respecting our initial budget. I only gave Joe 5 stars because they don't offer a 6 star review. He is excellent and the best choice available in the New York City area for wedding catering. Thank you Joe!

Chef Martin is amazing! He was so communicative and set an amazing menu from the beginning. His prices are also much more reasonable fair than other caterers I’ve spoken with. We used him for our daughters birthday party, and we had 60 guests. On the day of the event, Chef went above and beyond to ensure he provided a beautiful presentation, delicious food, and professional service. I would highly recommend!

Peter and his team were absolutely amazing. Not only was he great at communicating with me prior to the event, but he also offered many delicious options for the menu to ensure there would be something for everyone at my party. The team was on time and very respectful of the staff and the space, putting together a lovely set-up with flowers (!) that made the event feel that much more special. The food and drinks were delicious. My personal favorite were the pulled pork sliders and mojitos, but everyone raved about how delicious all of our appetizers were. Peter even sent a special plate over to me (the host) to ensure I'd have a chance both to eat and sample his delicious menu. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of him and his staff throughout the night. They were just so thoughtful and professional. I would (and will!) absolutely hire Peter and Creative Table Catering again in the future. My friends were also very impressed by him and the value of the services he offered at my event. In a city with innumerable options for caterers, I would highly recommend Peter for any event you have. He made my special night a celebration to remember.

Renee and her staff from RSVP Events did an excellent job. From Renee's ability to bring together 20 staff in a week, to her communication before, during, and after the event, we were extremely happy with her service. The staff looked great and were professional, friendly, and easy to work with. The event had 1700 attendees, including many VIPs, and Renee worked with her staff throughout the night to make sure everyone was taken care of and had a great time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
