What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Wonderful trainer! As a former cyclist who has a long-term mobility disability and chronic pain due to a spine injury, looking for a personal trainer who can hold me to high standards for physical performance while also avoiding triggering any injuries that would require yet another surgery is a really hard task. Michael is the first person I have worked with who is able to negotiate both. He is exceptionally knowledgeable in neurological injuries with his background in spine physical therapy rehab and also an expert eye in detecting issues in form that have translated into better gains in physical strength and performance for me on a weekly basis. Michael has such a deep knowledge of different modalities of exercise that we can consistently change up workouts and cycles to focus on different outcomes (e.g., stamina, raw strength, etc.), keep things interesting, and still not need to dive into any of the activities placed off-limits by my surgeon. In addition, Michael is also well-versed in working with people of different bodies, as well as different identities and backgrounds; as a disabled queer person with a non-US background, I would whole-heartedly recommend him as a qualified and much-more than competent trainer to work supportively folks of different identities and background (which, if this applies to you, you know is not true of many trainers in the Denver-area!). And, although it's not exactly in the job description, I must mention that he's also a great, empathic, and funny person that you will not mind spending time with. If you're looking for a trainer, and especially if you might have different needs from someone in this space, I would strongly recommend giving Michael a chance.

Michael is top of the line. I use him when I’m in town for work from NYC. He’s got great routines that target all of the goals I have set for myself. Added bonus is his physical therapy background. He’s helping me work though some old injuries on top of training. Price point is an incredible value. Most importantly, I see results. 💪🏻

I took a chance hiring Kristen...and I'm so glad I did! From our 1st phone call, I felt at ease. Kristen is personable, professional & respectful. I just finished my 1st week of training; we train at my home. The workouts are definitely not easy. Kristen pushes me just enough to help me finish each workout strong. I like that Kristen brings equipment & uses the space I have for workouts. She is attentive to my health challenges (neck, back) & willing to customize my workouts to meet my physical needs. I appreciate how Kristen checks in with me, during workouts, to make sure I'm not in pain. I'm excited to continue training with Kristen!

Kelly is an amazing trainer and I love working out with her. She has definitely made working out a positive experience and I look forward to each workout session. She works with your strengths and weaknesses to design a workout that is effective, but also enjoyable. I have seen a lot of progress not only physically, but also in my eating habits, which specifically has been a past struggle of mine.

I have worked out with Mark for 3 sessions now and am very happy. Out of the trainers that I got profiles from Thumbtack for he was the one that called me and asked what I was looking for. He is always prompt and professional. He keeps his foot in my fanny motivation-wise but is not annoying. He also has been really good about working with my physical therapist to come up with an appropriate routine for me.

I have been seeing him for about two months now and I’ve seen a good amount of improvement. He has a physical therapy background which is useful. We’ve been able to figure out that I’m stronger than I realize and a lot of my workouts with him are now about learning how to activate certain muscles and my coordination. I haven’t had an experience like this with other trainers. A lot of trainers would have me just show up and do the workout they have planned for me and then not really explain why we were doing it. He will overload you with knowledge if you want to know everything about the human body. I enjoy our weekly meetings and like having someone that I need to answer to. It helps me stay focused and excited about getting stronger and healthier.

Ryan fundamentally changed the way I approach my workouts. He not only helped motivate and guide me towards achieving my goals, but he helped me change the way I approach working out by helping me solidify the fundamentals first and foremost. In the grand scheme of strength training and coaching, Ryan focuses on building a solid foundation of mobility and flexibility while working towards increasing strength and range of motion. I have a much healthier (physically and mentally) approach to my fitness routine because of Ryan, and the results we achieved together was exactly what I was looking for.

I am so incredibly grateful to have found Noreen and Berto! I have been training with Noreen for around six months and let me tell you, there is a world of difference not only in my physical appearance, but also with my mental health as well. I have had some health problems within this time, including an appendectomy, and Noreen has stuck with me through all of it. I was able to bounce back and gain muscle so quickly after my surgery because of Noreen's sessions and her support. I am stronger, leaner, and happier now than I was before I started training with Noreen. I recently did 230lbs on the leg press, which I would have never attempted by myself! Noreen and Berto create intense workouts specifically catered to you, and they are different each time. They push you to places where you wouldn't have thought you could go. I have done exercises and certain lifts I thought I would have never been able to do before! This is the first time I actually look forward to working out! These two work around your schedule, work with your boundaries, work with your hesitancy... that's the key. They work WITH you. If you commit to them, they will commit to you. They will work hard with you. Also, something I really love about For Them Gainz is that there is NO gym intimidation whatsoever. I know that is a big factor preventing people, including myself, from going to the gym. It can be very uncomfortable to go to the gym when you are just starting out. With Noreen and Berto, they have their own private gym so there is no intimidation whatsoever. They have created a very welcoming and supportive atmosphere. There is no shaming, they will only support and encourage you. They teach you how to use the equipment properly and also how to adjust your nutrition, with Noreen giving me affordable, easy, and delicious recipes! I will recommend Noreen and Berto to everyone, because they truly are the best trainers around. You CANNOT go wrong with these two. They will change your life, for the better.
