There's only praise for a job well done by Ellen and her staff. The day I met Ellen she not only helped with planning out the perfect menu but it turns out she's got quite an eye for fashion and helped me pick out a beautiful dress and suit for my fiance. I saw she had talents in many other areas than running a booming catering business. She looked after and anticipated every detail that could have caused a problem and addressed it before hand. The main comment I heard through the day was "where did you find the caterer, her food is amazing." That was often from some very discerning guests that truly knew food. The Salmon was absolutely delicious and we had chosen a mushroom lasagna that was out of this world and the same can be said for the salads. I loved the little individual fruit cups also. Ellen runs her kitchen like a pro, shows up early and all you have to do is let her do her thing. Truly outstanding!!!

We were so happy with our experience with Every Detail Catering. We had a Sunday afternoon event for 30. Coordinating the event with Chuck was easy. Food was delicious! Our guests loved everything particularly the eggplant appetizer and the salmon entree. I would definitely use Chuck again.

All I can say is wow!!!! Chef Chris and the rest of the New York Catering Service team were amazing from start to finish. Chef Chris worked with me on a menu that fit my needs and dietary restrictions. He was so helpful with all the planning that goes into throwing a party. I’ve never done this before, so I was a bit nervous about the logistics, but Chris and his team made it absolutely seamless! I cannot wait for the next one!!! Highly recommended!!!

This was our second time collaborating with Bacco for a catered birthday party for 55 people. Because our first experience was so extraordinary, we were immediately at ease this time, knowing that everything would be taken care of and our guests would be happy. Chef Lauren excels in every aspect of catering. Her food is delicious with subtle flavors and creative menu choices. Our guests raved about her mushroom and gruyere bread pudding hors d'oeuvres, as well as a Moroccan-spiced salmon over lentils. There were plenty of leftovers too. Chef Lauren is excellent at helping plan the perfect party. She makes smart suggestions, ones that add quality without needlessly running up the bill. Her servers are very professional and friendly. Her supplier for party rentals (eg, glasses, tables, etc.) was also outstanding. Our kitchen was spotless when she left. Chef Lauren communicates clearly and frequently from Day 1 through the final clean up. She handles everything effortlessly and joyfully, allowing *us* to enjoy the party (and, just as importantly, the weeks leading up to the party). We cannot recommend her highly enough. We look forward to having her and her crew as part of many events for years to come.

Our company has already hired Amoraco for 3 events this year. Tamara and her staff are flexible, polite, prompt, and do an amazing job at creating filling finger foods. Amoraco is a great catering option for in-office events, they require very little space/resources to prep. Their presentation is always beautiful. Our guests are always saying how delicious the food is at our events. We would definitely consider Amoraco again in the future.

Do you want to know the definition of Excellence? Hire Luisa c/o De Cicco's Event Planning! I have never worked with a more professional, friendly company. Luisa has a way of catering to her client's and making them feel like they're at the top of her priority list. If you need her, drop her an E-mail and she IMMEDIATELY gets back to you. Need a personal Chef to teach you how to cook? Luisa can connect you with top of the line quality professional's that KNOW what they're doing in the kitchen. I'm currently taking lesson's from her Chef and I went from being a novice who's food was either bland, burnt and completely un-edible, to a person who can now chop, dice and make a meal so good, my family calls me asking me to cook for them again. Luisa and her staff are so friendly, so welcoming and very attentive to the needs of the client. Luisa has done a fine job in picking her staff and I’m extremely happy I hired her company because it was worth every penny.

Chef Adolfo and his crew did a fantastic job my birthday party. Our party was planned last minute and we hired Adolfo only a few days before the event. As you can imagine we were very nervous and hesitant to hire someone with such short notice, but he did not disappoint. The food choices were excellent, we were able to pick exactly the menu items we wanted and it was put together in our own kitchen. The food was delicious and the presentation was impressive. It was a hassle free party. His staff was very helpful and professional. I highly recommend Manjar Catering Boutique to anybody looking for a caterer. Adolfo was very attentive and very professional at all times. Thank you Adolfo!

I met Erika and savored her cooking during a private week long health retreat in Hudson, NY. Erika's cooking was mouth watering, innovative and used local and mostly organic ingredients. All the participants also lost quite a few pounds that week while not feeling deprived and celebrating food! I strongly recommend Erika for catering, health retreats and teaching ....

Working with Chef Martin was wonderful! Finding him was our first foray into Thumbtack - and it turned out marvelously! Having read the MANY 5-star reviews for Chef Martin/Mirabell Catering we were dubious... could he be THAT good? The answer is a resounding yes! We needed a caterer for an entirely gluten-free 4-hour open house for roughly 70 people - kids and adults. Chef Martin was swift in his response to our request for a caterer. He articulated a clear understanding of the menu needs, and how to avoid cross contamination - a BIG deal when you have celiac disease and have to live gluten free. He developed a menu offering a wide array of finger foods at a very reasonable price. By phone, we found him to be a gentleman - a rarity these days. He was professional and organized, calm and cool, affable and charming. (I had a feeling that our friends would want to hang out in the kitchen with Chef Martin and I was right!) Chef Martin arrived promptly and brought everything he needed. As he settled in - even putting us at ease as we hurried to finish readying for our guests - his waitstaff person arrived. From there, Chef Martin turned out hours of incredibly tasty, plentiful, finger food for a large and hungry crowd. Truly, everyone raved about the food throughout the party and after. And Chef Martin WAS as charming in person as he had been by phone. The kitchen was packed! Now here is the totally unexpected thing that happened with Chef Martin: whenever I walked through the kitchen in need of something, before I could say much of anything at all, it would be taken care of or I'd find what I had come in search of in my hand. Chef Martin knows events! His presence just made everything easier. I hope we will have the pleasure of working with him again. My husband and I are proud to say that we have held some great parties, but we enjoyed this party in our home more than any other. It was delightful to spend time with our guests - and to eat! It was a joy to not worry about the cooking or having to hustle about cleaning up throughout or face a terrible mess after. Chef Martin and his gracious and professional staff made our holiday open house easy for us, and a marvelously memorable event for our guests. If you need a personal chef/ caterer, Chef Martin is the man you want.

Best experience ever. We needed a bartender for a private birthday party I was organizing for my boss and took a chance on hiring HighLife. Not only did we get a bartender but we got Tyler himself - the owner of HighLife. He was amazing. Our chef we hired from a different company was a disaster and Tyler took it upon himself to help serve the meals, set the tables with wine glasses, pour water/wine throughout dinner, not to mention making the best margaritas on the planet. Extremely reasonable prices with top notch service that is so hard to find these days. Next party I organize I will simply call Tyler. Whether I need a bartender, chef, catering, etc - HighLife will be my only phone call. Thanks for everything!

f despite that it was thanksiving day, and she had her own family, Chef Aless catered my family's special day with superb attention to both the food, which was beyond delicious and plentiful, and presentation. She arrived early with a trolley full of delectable hors d'oeuvres, the best turkey ever baked, and containers full of great accompanying veggies. This was the first time I have ever needed outside catering, but the experience of having Chef Aless was so seamless, and the food was so perfect, that even if I have to invent an occasion, which I will, I know she could handle it with a touch of that marvelous French charm and expertise, and very little interference from me! I'm a cook, specifically a baker. but Chef Aless is a master, and everything was delivered expeditiously and promptly. And with heart... A truly wonderful experience. Thank you so much Alessandra. T & C Catering did an incredible job for our daughter's Sweet Sixteen. If you want great food, presentation, and reasonable prices, then T & C is the right caterer for you! From the tastings, to menu planning, to execution on the day of our daughter’s Sweet Sixteen, Carol and her staff were remarkable. Carol was so easy to work with and accommodated our request. We are truly grateful…... They catered to both the adults and the teenagers with appetizers such as (sliders, chicken & waffles & scallops wrapped in bacon). My guests are still talking about the delicious sliders (big hit with the younger generation). We had a Caribbean theme that consisted of Jerk chicken, Curry chicken, Oxtails (my daughters favorite) etc. All of the guests raved about the food and the attentiveness of the serving staff. I cannot say enough about T & C Catering, Thank you to the Chef for making the delicious food. You are definitely getting so much more when you hire them. I will absolutely without a doubt hire them for future events. Best, Eric & Lisandra

Claude and Craig were fantastic, catering events on 3 consecutive days for me a week ago, with less than 2 weeks to do it. They were very kind, and are talented, producing a spread each day that everyone enjoyed a lot, and were punctual, swift in setting up and breaking down, which they did discretely as the party continued on around them. The well-abled duo was able to handle a somewhat complex arrangement in a short window (and popular time) with excellent communication, and offered competitive rates, especially for the use of better ingredients (organic & non-GMO). I would and have already recommended them to friends. Unique dishes, down-home style cooking, with flairs of other cultures mixed in - thoroughly enjoyable. The veggie eggplant lasagna was a big hit, among others.

JP catered a party for us of about 40 adults and 20 kids and we had a great experience working with him - highly recommend his services! He was responsive and flexible during the planning phase, able to modify his gameplan day-of when our rooftop venue got rained out :( and prepped and served the food efficiently, beautifully and notably, without needing anything from us as hosts, letting us truly enjoy the party. On top of all that, all the guests loved the food itself and several have inquired about contacting JP for their own events. I’m happy to make those connections because JP is truly a great chef and a consummate professional!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
